Edwards Reacts To Clinton Campaign Tasteless Attacks

Keene, New Hampshire – Today, Senator John Edwards today responded to Senator Clinton's aide, Jay Carson's statement that "In order to be president, you need to do more than read articles about people who need help and talk about them," saying Clinton is "somebody who's actually going to help people and not use them as talking points."

Edwards said:

"My reaction is this campaign doesn't seem to have a conscience. This is not about them - it's about families like the Sarkisyans, the Lowes, and the Lakeys, who desperately need a voice.

"I was willing last night to let this issue go and even willing to let it go earlier today. The more I thought about the idea that somehow everything is about them – it's an indication that they have no conscience about what's at stake here. These families are what this is about. It's not about them nor is it about me. It's about whether we're going to actually stand up and fight for these people.

"If she wants to argue with me or the campaign wants to argue with me about my position about some issue, they're totally entitled to do that. But to talk this way about families who have struggled and suffered and want to be heard – the Lakeys, James Lowe, the Sarkisyans - they didn't come here by accident. They believe they have a responsibly to their families and their children to create a better America and make certain that what happened in the Sarkisyan family's case never happens to any other family. I'm proud of them. Everyone should be proud of them."

Rasmussen Reports, says that John is up 9% nationally since Dec. 29th, and 5% since the Iowa Caucuses were held. She's running scared and being very negative. I thought they would mock John for giving a human voice to why we're upset with the status quo, and Hillary didn't let us down.

This is only the second time I have heard "get over it". The first was by Justice Scalia after Bush v. Gore. The second by the Clinton campaign after New Hampshire. Arrogant and dismissive in both cases. Scalia used it in Bush's behalf instead of addressing the legal issues raised by the case. Now it is used the same way in Clinton's behalf. It is a comment by those who justify any means by the results. It probably indicates that the speakers know that their actions were way outside accepted behavior. It may indicate that the speakers know that their actions violated the law.

Bette Lasky, the assistant House majority leader and a top Clinton supporter who was involved in both the e-mail and poll interventions, said she was sorry to hear about the bad feelings but hoped Obama supporters would get over it. "It's politics, and it happens," she said.

In a recent address at Iona College, Justice Scalia told an audience that it was time for people to stop complaining about the case. "It's water over the deck — get over it," Scalia said to laughs in the audience.
