Howard Dean Buys Ads in Crtical N.H.
WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean will begin airing a third ad Tuesday in an attempt to reach voters in New Hampshire, a critical primary state where he is running close with rival John Kerry.

The ads, which will cost close to $400,000, follow commercials that began airing Monday on President Bush's home turf of Texas and in Iowa earlier this summer.

It is unusual for a candidate to begin airing commercials so early in the campaign, especially in a state such as Texas which is not an early primary state. No other candidate has gone on the air yet, but Dean is looking to build momentum off his early start in raising money and organizing supporters through his Web site.

The latest ad will air in New Hampshire and on Boston stations, which are watched by many southern New Hampshire voters. Dean is running close to Massachusetts Sen. Kerry in New Hampshire, which has the nation's first primary, tentatively set for Jan. 27.

2. He's timing these ads well to do 2 things
1) overcome his name recognition problem and beat the more established Dems to the airwaves

2) keep his base energized by attacking Bush (in Texas) and it increases his image as a courageous and innovative candidate

4. Dean Is Shooting His Bankroll Prematurely
The Texas ad will appeal to the 70,000 internet activists he already has, but will not do much for the rest of the country (who is not paying attention to politics). Further proof that Dean is playing checkers at the chess table.

---

Kerry will not respond with his own ads, said campaign manager Jim Jordan.

"It's an interesting decision in light of the very tight presidential spending cap in New Hampshire," Jordan said. "I think we will opt for conserving our resources for a bit longer."

Dean raised $10.1 million in the first half of the year, the second-highest total among the nine candidates. Kerry has raised the most, $13 million.

Dean spent $3.7 million in the same period, leaving him in fourth place in the amount of money left in the back, after Kerry, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri.

---

People around here whine about what a quiet campaign Kerry is running, but Kerry is conserving his fire until people are paying attention. Dean's aggression will be his downfall. He will be left with about $6.5 million, while Kerry will be nearly double his resources.

6. The TX ad is brilliant strategy
and you've got to spend money to make money. Dean is applying his resources wisely. He can't hold on to it and wait to bring in more if no one else ever hears about him. And the more they hear (I'm betting) the more support he will have.

Fortunately, sometimes, dollars don't have a one to one relationship to votes!

7. The $500,000 raised as a challenge to Bush, went to pay for the ads.
Dean is actually second in spending and has a lot to show for it, he's starting TV ads and expanding to other states.

8. I beg to differ
In the last few hours alone, Dean has had 1,000+ people sign up for meetups. His momentum is building at an exponential rate. He is fiscally schrewd (sp?), and I find it difficult to believe he's blowing his wad. I can't wait to see how much money he earns this quarter. I predict it will be newsworthy.

9. Interesting Comments from Kerry Camp
So far Dean (and Trippi) are looking like campaign geniuses. A couple factual corrections, though. I believe New Hampshire spending limits aren't terribly strict, given that Boston media buys count toward Massachusetts limits. Also, ALL expenditures count. Dean spends very little on the normal trappings of a presidential campaign, since his is a very lean operation.

As for the Texas ad buy, it's masterful. It's relatively cheap, earned free media replay just about everywhere, and highlights President Bush's long vacation in the face of so many pressing national problems.

I also agree with the other poster about the acceleration effect, that you can't make money without spending some. I would also point out that all financial comparisons (including Kerry's) do not yet include federal matching funds. Dean's "accounts receivable," i.e. including matching funds, mean he's also keeping plenty of bank balance in reserve. (We all know by now how effective he's been at raising contributions of $250 and less, which are fully matched by the government.)

Is this a waste? Think of the ads (or whatever) Kerry could buy with this instead of stuffing the faces of "Fat Cats"...

12. Actually, DrFunk...the money he is spending was the money
he collected in a weekend of fundraising over the internet...

It's money well spent.

There's more if he needs it. :-)

10. remember Dean bought ad time in Iowa just before his supporters
at Meetups wrote letters to undecided voters. Now they are doing the same in NH--I think it is a good strategy.

13. I love Dean's ad on his TV that tells about the People he has
writing letters to New Hampshire People just like happened in Iowa!

They are trying to keep the momentum going and not leaving it to chance that someone will find out about Dean! It's the Big, Blue, Lean, Dean, Fightin', Machine coming to your Town! :kick:
