Mormonism Isn't the Issue; It's All About Money and Power

To identify Mitt Romney's religion as the sticking point for conservatives misses the point. Here's why: The same Christian conservatives who tend to disparage Romney have embraced another member of the Mormon faith as one of their own. I'm speaking, of course, of conservative commentator Glenn Beck.

In some ways, it's understandable that conservatives are wary of Romney. His opponents have accused him, with some justification, of flip-flopping for the sake of political expediency. And now, they say, he's not to be trusted. Beck, on the other hand, has gone out of his way to support conservative Christian causes. He's staunchly against Roe v. Wade and opposes gay rights with equal fervor. Health-care reform? There's never been any question that he wants it repealed.

But the clincher? Beck's one of the most steadfast supporters of Israel you're likely to find these days. And that's saying something in a nation that overwhelmingly supports Israel - 63% of respondents in a new Quinnipiac poll say Obama should support Israel, while only 20% hold the contrary view. Beck has taken this one step further, even going so far as to hold a "Restoring Courage" rally in Israel a couple of months ago.

2. evangelicals spent the decades of the 1980s and 1990s

listening to sermons decrying Mormonism, JW, and many other groups as cults. They will have a hard time voting for him and TPTB know it.
