Meeting Kucinich: a universal experience
This is a report from a woman who recently met Dennis, passed on with her permission; it's an email, so there is no link. This is significant because it seems to be a universal reaction to meeting and/or speaking to the man:

<snip>

The day before (Monday) I had picked a quart of mulberries from the tree in my backyard, thinking that DJK needed some mulberries, by golly. Plus I had two books I wanted to give him from a Buddhist philosopher and peace activist named Daisaku Ikeda (Nam myoho renge kyo, anyone?). One book is called _For the Sake of Peace_ and the other is _Choose Hope_. (Middleway Press, 2000, 2001 - I highly recommend these, Choose Hope especially ).

So here comes Dennis, out of a car. A group of us were standing in front of the coffeehouse and a crowd was already inside. He came up to us and started shaking hands. I shook hands with him and said, "Good morning, Congressman!" and he said, "Good morning" very pleasantly. Then he kept walking as if he was headed somewhere specific, but it was away from the door of the coffeehouse. He went up to the woman behind me and shook her hand. She was in a wheelchair. DJK bent down to look at her face. I don't quite know how to describe it, but he was being considerate without in the least being patronizing, you know? Then he chatted up a couple of kids in a stroller (I don't think they were registered voters <: ) while the adults were waiting for him to talk. Okay? This guy takes time for people in wheelchairs and children in strollers.

So in he goes after 5 more minutes of handshakes and starts talking. He was in a circle surrounded on all sides by supporters and curious citizens. He was marvelous, genuine, sincere, moving and invigorating, just as you would expect. Then he took questions.

The first question was a doozie. It wasn't about the economy, the war in Iraq, health care. No, this woman started by saying that the kid beside her was her son, and that he had ADHD and a myriad of learning disabilities, sleep disorder and tics, and so did her other son. She believed these problems are the result of enforced immunizations, and the studies on these shots are being buried. And what did he intend to do as President?

Ooh-boy, I thought, what in the world is Dennis gonna do now? The first question, and it's pretty obscure (while incredibly important, of course - this woman was very passionate and informed), and now Dennis is going to have to say some version of , I'll look into that and get back with you.

Uh-uh. Dennis, my hero, my candidate, starts talking all about mercury poisoning, "thimerosal in vaccines" (I had to look it up), pharmaceutical companies that make this stuff, and legislation that's in the works already. He knocked it clear out of the ballpark. I was stunned. The woman was so grateful that someone understood her pain. Once again, this guy never fails to impress me.

The rest of the questions were to be expected (war, economy, how he can beat Bush) and he answered with humor, aplomb, and grace.

Then the IL Co-Chair ended the Q&A and said DJK had to eat some breakfast. There was a small room roped off which had some oatmeal, fruit, etc. Of course, people didn't leave him alone, they followed him into that room. He was completely poised throughout, and talked as much as he could. (He never did eat anything, they just wrapped it up for the car ride.) I hovered, waiting for my chance. Then I saw he was never going to sit down, so I began to talk with one of his aides, Dot, who is the Nat'l Network Coordinator, and I gave her the mulberries. She said, "Yum" and that she would give them to him. Then I said I have some books for Dennis as well, and she said why don't you give them to him yourself? So I decided I would.

He finished speaking with someone and then he turned to me. I shook his hand and grinned like an idiot and said, "Hello, Dennis, my name is Ann and I drove down from Madison to see you." He still held my hand in that "longshoreman's grip" someone else posted about.

Then I said, "I want you to have these books from Daisaku Ikeda."

"Oh, I know Daisaku Ikeda," said DJK. I am, of course, nonplussed again.

Then he looked at the books, pointed to _For the Sake of Peace_ and said, "I already have that," (knock-me-over-with-a-feather time) "but I've not seen this one," pointing to _Choose Hope_. Only then did he let go of my hand.

"Oh, then I want to give this to you. This man is my mentor in peace. You've heard 'Nam myoho renge kyo?' "

"Of course," said Dennis. (Pick-me-up-off-the-floor time.) "Would you write your name and address in the front?"

I said to him, "Oh, it's not important. You don't have to contact me, and I'm already on your volunteer list."

He paused just a second, looked at me in the face and said "It's important to me." (Dying-and-going-to-heaven time.)

Okay?! OKAY?! While I am writing down my name and address, he chats with someone else, then I hand it back to him, and he shakes my hand again, and holds it, and says, "You have such a great handshake!"

I said, "That's how my father taught me to shake hands. And you know, Dennis, I just read in an article, 'Although slight in stature, he has the grip of a longshoreman,' and you do!"(What's it like to have people quote your own press coverage to you? Weird.)

Then he said, "What do you do in Madison, Ann?" And I told him I'm a librarian and I work as a research consultant.

He said, "We're going to open an office in Madison soon. Can we count on your support?" He never took his eyes off mine.

I said, "Dennis, you are going to be the next President of the United States and I will never stop working until you are."

"Thank you," he said, and then he was on his way out the door.

He talked to some press outside, then he waved at the adoring crowd, got in his car and drove off.

1. Thank you for that
We need to work hard to get Dennis up in the polls its so hard though really, when progressive people like DK arent regarded as they once were, there was a time, where being progressive was the way to be and conservative wasnt, now it seems the total opposite. DK gives me hope, and I really appreciate the man for all he does. I really think people should listen to him, and also I think the party has to be the democratic party again, I miss the party that pushed for universal health care and tried to repeal Taft-Hartley, and now that party is slipping away, and also we need populists on economics imo.

4. Here's my box.
I keep it right next to my computer. I got this yesterday, but waited for her permission to pass it on.

This is the message about Dennis that needs to get out. The connection he makes with real people. The way his issues are directly connected to benefitting real people.

None of the other candidates come close.

5. I've heard stories like that of normal people meeting with Dennis
you know and it really brings a smile to ones face. You know why I think Dennis can connect good with the people, he knows their struggles because he went through tough times as a poor kid in Cleveland. He worked his way through college, he really is someone who I admire deeply not only on the issues but what a work ethic and hes one of the people basically, Tuesday night was a rare performance by Dennis, Ive seen him speak, he has something and it is beautiful, Dennis has a new combined with an old vision for America that her duty is to help her citizens.

7. Thanks John
Just for a little cheer, folks, I discovered after months of thinking there was no campaign staff where I live that OH YES there is! Not only that but hundreds of supporters in the state already. :) 60 that we know of in my county alone and more that I'm nagging the hell out of to look into Darling Dennis. That's my new nick for him. Darling Dennis, the new American Hero.

Anyway, we had some great ideas tossed out at the meetup and I should be talking to our State campaign manager within the next week about some of them. We also made a widely varied group, Greens, Dems, Republicans, Natural Law, you name it. I think there was someone from every possible political party that exists in the US. We had only 11 RSVP to be there and wound up with a good 20 people. The State campaign manager informed us there were a LOT more of us but that Meetup hadn't gotten out to everyone who had volunteered. It seems there was some problem with contact information being distributed, at least in our area and he's had a hard time tracking people down.

I just wanted to cheer everyone up a little and tell you my right leaning hubby is even into Kucinich now, to the point where even HE's offering to spread the word! I nearly fainted when he said (several times) he wants to help somehow. We're spreading and growing even when we don't realize it or see it. Keep the hope alive!

He appeals to your heart thats why I want him to be president so much. We can do so much good in the world and Kucinich knows and key word he wants to accomplish this. I see the RFK analogies on him, and I completely agree.

11. I heard much the same from
my meetup tonight. I reported on that in Activism/Events. But I can say that the special Kucinich magic had touched everyone present, and that we are a fast-growing group of Kucitizens here in So Cal. Lots of good things for DK's campaign in the works!

12. Thank you for sharing that!
That is such a beautiful post!

Can you imagine our country in the hands of a man of that stature and depth? What an honor that would be! What a blessing for us!

I am so happy for you that you met him and had such an incredible experience :) If Dennis wins, I know we will be on the right track for fixing our karma. We are at a point where nothing short of a world apology will ward that off. Marianne Williamson wrote in her book "Illuminata" that America would never be healthy, whole and blessed until she, until we, apologized and made reparations for the atrocities we visited on African-Americans (who did NOT, contrary to Bush's claim, come here searching for their freedom!) and on Native-Americans. I've agreed with her assessment for years but never thought a man like Dennis would present himself for the Presidency! Only a man of his spiritual depth would have the integrity and strength to do this.

Peace

Prayer for America

by Marianne Williamson, in "Illuminata"

Dear God,
We join in prayer to celebrate this nation and surrender its destiny to You.
We give thanks for the founding of this country.
We give thanks for and bless the souls of those who came before us to found this nation,
to nurture and save it.
We ask that God's spirit now fill our hearts with righteousness.
May we play our parts in the healing and the furtherance of our country.
May we be cleansed of all destructive thoughts.
May judgment of others, bigotry, racism, and intolerance be washed clean from our hearts.
May our minds be filled with the thoughts of God.
His unconditional love and His acceptance of all people.
May this nation be forgiven its transgressions against the African-American, the Native American,
the nation of Vietnam,
our men and women who should not have suffered or died or there, and any all others.
Please bless their souls.
May we learn from our mistakes,
that the people who have died from them shall not have died in vain.

May our lives be turned into instruments of resurrection,
that the sins of our fathers might be reversed through us.
May the beauty and the greatness of this land burst furth once more in the hearts of its people.
May the dreams of our forefathers be realized in us,
that we might live in honesty and integrity and excellence with our neighbors.
May this country once again become a light
unto the nations of hope and goodness and peace and freedom.
May violence and darkness be cast out of our midst.
May hatred no longer find fertile ground in which to grow here.

May all of us feel God's grace upon us.
Reignite, dear God, the spirit of truth in our hearts.
May our nations be given a new light,
the sacred fire that once shone so bright from shore to shore.
May we be repaired.
May we be forgiven.
May our children be blessed.
May we be renewed.
Dear God, please bless America.
Amen.

13. My pleasure.
While we are debating the issues and providing the evidence to prove our candidate is the real deal, there is a part of me that keeps thinking about intangibles. People will listen to the issues and decide who they agree with, but it's often the intangibles that help make their final decision. With Dennis, people show up liking his ideas, and leave loving the man. It's not something you can measure or document; it just happens. Explaining or describing why is not the same as just being there. It is my heartfelt hope that this particular intangible will work it's way through the voters and help to carry the day.

14. I agree LWolf...it is that "intangible"
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 12:40 PM by Desertrose
that ultimately causes us to vote or not vote for that particular candidate....regardless of the issues or the mental stuff....I contend that voting in still a larger percentage of simple "gut reaction"...a deeply inner choice....(why else do some folks get so riled up when thier candidate gets bashed/questioned?)

If it were simply a matter of looking at a chart & choosing the one who most closely agrees with you...why all the fuss. But it is so much more....
and I love your statement :
"With Dennis, people show up liking his ideas, and leave loving the man."

There is a "definite intangible something" about the man!

Peace

15. Putting Dennis in office is great for our own self-image
Years from now, we can look back and talk about how we fought for honesty and peace and equality and civil rights. That's something the Dean people will never be able to say about themselves - unless they switch candidates.
