Now the big question: What does Schwarzenegger know?

By Gary Delsohn -- Bee Capitol Bureau

Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Friday, August 8, 2003

NORWALK -- He pulled his election papers Thursday after shaking hands in a swarm of worshipful fans at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's Office, getting the kind of rock-star welcome a youthful Mick Jagger would have received.

He gave his first post-"Tonight Show" interview to "Access Hollywood," a show-business TV magazine that asks adoring questions and fawns when stars come back with even their most scripted replies.

Now the question action film star Arnold Schwarzenegger will hear for the next two months is: Who is this larger-than-life guy, really, and what does he know about running the state of California?

2. Every hear of Ronald Reagan?
He was braindead in the 50's. I know people who knew him. The worst problem the CA Republicans had when he ran for gov and for re-election as gov was getting him not to speak off the cuff. He tended to say extreme things or use foul language. Remember "If there's to be a bloodbath, let it be now." This was his response at a Bakersfield School Board meeting to a question about Kent State. It is just one many statements his handlers couldn't control and later had to do damage-control on. Yet look how his handlers got him through two govenor's elections and two Presidential elections. Did anyone read"Landslide: The Unmaking of the Presidency: 1980 to 1988?" This book, written by two Republican journalists, details his lack of any cognitive ability while in the White House. Because the writers were Republicans, his handlers felt safe talking to them. Everyone in the White House called Reagan the absent President. They all knew he was mentally gone and would joke about it. Virtually everyone there was authorized to sign his name onto bills. He would space out when future speeches were discussed. Once he tried to write a speech and was told that, if he gave it, it would destroy his career.

I have seen the Democats come from over-confidence over and over again. I do not feel good about this recall election and I think that the Democrats need to work hard or it will be a disaster.
