Cruz Bustamante Candidate Ballot Statement
Soon, the books will be published and mailed to California voters with the 250-word maximum statements of the gubernatorial candidates. This is Cruz Bustamante's statement:

"For months, I've said I oppose the recall. I still do. But if you support my work, as a university Regent and Trustee to win fair admissions policies for every student without regard to race; If you support my work as Chairman of the State Lands Commission to protect our coast and rivers; If you support my work as Lieutenant Governor to win living wages; If you voted for the bonds I've worked to place on the ballot to rebuild California's schools and roads under Project Labor Agreements; If you supported my lawsuit against energy price-gougers like Enron; If you agree that every Californian should have health insurance they can afford; If you think I was right to increase funding for textbooks for every student; If you believe that hardworking, taxpaying immigrants deserve the chance to apply for citizenship and reunify their families; If you've stood with me in support of farm workers; If you support equal opportunity and oppose any kind of discrimination; If you think I was right to appoint the first lesbian legislator to serve as Speaker Pro Tern of the Assembly; If you support my efforts to protect privacy from those who would sell it for profit; If you think a woman's right to choose ought to be a am asking you to vote "No" on the Recall and "Yes" on Bustamante. I appreciate your consideration."

Bustamante is a progressive who stands for lesbian and gay rights, abortion rights, increasing the relative taxation of the wealthy, farm worker collective bargaining rights, and stands against the racist assaults on immigrants and people of color.

There are no "if's, and's or but's" about it. Bustamante is the choice for CA progressives looking for a winning agenda.

2. Yeah, but he's supporting Joe Lieberman
How could a true progressive ever support a right-wing anti-choice anti-gay supply side Republican like Joe Lieberman. Why doesn't Lieberman go back to Israel and run for Sharon's job?

4. That's not fair, either.
It's ridiculous that some people would use Bustamante's support of Lieberman against him. Of course, the whole Democratic Party supported him along with Gore just three years ago. I agree with you on that point...

I don't support Lieberman for president. But I'm not sectarian. I don't think most self-described progressives are either. The view you describe is indicative of a small minority.

10. I know that...
I thought that it was perhaps unfair toward those of us opposed to Lieberman's presidential candidacy, that's all.

14. He's the Lt. Governor
You either support the democratic process or you don't. Undermining the legitimately elected Governor & Lt. Governor is wrong. No on recall, Yes on Bustamante.

6. Here's why no Arnold, no Simon...
Under proposition 34, only candidates agreeing to spend less than $10,624,000 may have a statement in the candidate's guide. I think it's fair to assume then that neither Simon not Arnie agreed to this limit.

It should be pointed out though, that more money may be spend through independent committees, etc., than this amount.

Nice to read.

I understand Arnold's statement will be in the form of a discount coupon to buy Human Growth Hormone from your nearest GNC store...
