Davis Rips Calif. Recall As Power Grab]
Davis Rips Calif. Recall As Power Grab

By ERICA WERNER
The Associated Press
Tuesday, August 19, 2003; 11:36 PM

LOS ANGELES - Gov. Gray Davis, taking a defiant stance in his first major address since the recall qualified for the statewide ballot, on Tuesday denounced the Oct. 7 vote as a Republican power grab and made no apologies for his record as governor.

In the address, televised statewide, the governor acknowledged that "we made our share of mistakes" handling the state's energy crisis and budget deficit. But in asking for voters' support, he sought to place the state's troubles in the perspective of an American economy that has "tanked" and touted his record on education, health care, privacy protection, the environment and reproductive rights.

"The Republicans behind this recall say they want you to oust me for past mistakes," he said. "My friends, they don't give a rip about past mistakes. This is all about control in the future, seizing back the governor's chair and believing with so many candidates running they can do it with just a handful of California voters."

The speech at the University of California at Los Angeles came hours after Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the most prominent Democrat on the recall ballot, released his own plan to turn around the state's economy, further complicating Davis' fight to remain in office. Davis had sought to keep other Democrats off the ballot so he could focus on defeating the recall.

Bustamante has urged Californians to vote against the recall, but to choose him in case the governor is ousted.

2. it's really sad how the news media is spinning this
I turned on a local news channel and all they had was clips of Davis saying that he's made mistakes and looking like a wimp. Davis isn't exactly an inspired speech giver but his speech had some good points all of which were ignored to make way for clips from Arnold's new ad. This is rediculous.

3. It is. There are documents linking Rove and Arnold
The trouble is that we've so alienated the Greens and other progressives, that most of them are voting for the recall. We need to stop the progressive wars.

4. steal California
It's a preparation for Bush's election of 2004.

California is a state with big votes. When they activate resource to recall Governor, they aimed at President election of 2004.

What's wrong with Gray Davis? Had he had a personal affair with a woman? Or Did he start an unnecessary war with Iraq? Nothing. It's only the slow economy. But the whole US are facing an economy downturn. Why do they pick up California?

They want a Republican Governor in 2004. That they can do some dirty tricks in voting without being investigated. Just like what happened in Florida election on 2000.
