Dean's Statement on......the March on Washington
Statement on 40th Anniversary of the March on Washington

BURLINGTON--Following his appearance at last weekend’s commemorative march on the National Mall, Democratic presidential candidate Governor Howard Dean, M.D., issued this statement today on the 40th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington:

“Forty years ago today, a quarter of a million Americans peacefully protested the nation’s unjust segregationist policies. Those patriots of all races and from all walks of life joined together on the Washington Mall to change their country and fight for basic civil rights and equal rights for all Americans. They listened as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., outlined his vision for an America where people were judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

“Today, Dr. King’s dream is being attacked by an administration that seeks to unravel the decades of improvements made on civil rights and gaining equal rights for all Americans. Our civil liberties are under assault, our moral role in the world has been compromised, and we’ve seen progress on issues like the civil rights and the environment reversed by an administration that seeks again to divide us once again by race, gender, sexual orientation, and income. Just as those 1963 marchers changed the course of the country, we must today take another stand to set right the course of American society. We can take our country back, and, as Dr. King said, we must let freedom ring.”

7. Come on..Dean did have a roommate involved in the Civil Rights
movement, didn't he? Of course, I wonder why he never felt personally compelled to join him. Or any of the Vietnam protests.

Hm...oh well, I'm sure he has a reasonable explanation. It's not like those were matters that defined the character of one's life goals or anything.

9. To Freedom Ride Or Ski, That Is The Question
Whether 'tis nobler to oppose a war you don't believe in or go skiing.

Roommate in the Civil Rights movement, brother in Cambodia - I'd say the choice is clear. I'm thinking Aspen.

17. He is 54
which made him 14 back then. Care to tell me how many civil rights marches or anything else you were doing at 14? How about Kerry at 14? I eagerly await your list of these activities.

2. Good speech
I kind of thought the "Forty years ago today" was a little Abe Lincoln (and he, sir, is NO Abe Lincoln! j/k Dean supporters, don't freak out).

8. CounterPunch...
They were the big Bush supporters in 2000, right? They called him Nader, but we knew who they meant. Or at least we do now! Over the cliff, we go.

10. The fact that any of you would bash him for making these statements
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 01:20 PM by khephra
Just shows how low you've gone. You've utterly lost perspective. Some of you I expect that from, but others in this thread have disappointed me greatly.

There are times and places for you all to bash Dean to your hearts content, but for heaven's sake, when someone is saying something positive about the civil rights movement we should applaud them and not do the work of the Right for them.

11. The fact that Dean calls those who worked for Civil Rights
for decades, "Bushlite" doesn't seem to have bothered you much.

Too bad. It disappointed me greatly from the moment he said it.

12. you are infering to Senator Kerry right blm?
and the others. IMO I think Dean was saying the right thing but to call Kerry or Gephardt or Edwards or even Lieberman bushites is wrong. Kerry was so anti nixon he made the guy's enemy list, now thats cool, Kucinich we know is no Bushite, Gephardt oh yeah the union supporter is a real bushite and well he aint perfect, Edwards I am not famliar but I do know hes a pretty good guy and a fresh alternative to Larch Faircloth, Lieberman I dont like the guy but hes done good things and I still dont like him much.

13. You've all lost perspective
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 01:45 PM by khephra
if you think that it's the time and place for bashing him for that.

There's lot of areas where you've been right to attack Dean, but to attack him for making postive statements today shows that you've all gone lower than any Bush-lite attack that Dean might have made.

That's a GOP type of an attack...and I'm feeling quite sick to my stomach right now.

14. I disagree with that attack khep honestly
but I tell you this if hes gonna call the pretty liberal Kerry a bushite thats kinda disturbing and I support one of the most if not the most anti Bush of them all. BTW no offense to Dean but I didnt like that country club quote, Kucinich and plenty of others dont fit in to that criteria. So I agree it was a wrong attack, ok? on blm's part, I am cool.

16. I don't attack him for what he said today.
I point out that you don't seem to mind his attacks that were unfair, but have no trouble pointing out attacks on him that you deem unfair. Dean seemed to think that Kerry has no right to criticize Bush now because he supported the resolution. Well, would Kerry be cool to tell Dean he has no right to speak now for a Civil Rights movement he did not join?

There were posts putting other candidates down for not being in DC on Sat. Well, most of those others were actually working on those issues for DECADES.

Congratulations to Dean for joining them.

15. The thing that I like about Dean the most is that he recognizes the
struggles of groups like civil and women's rights. And he acknowledges that what these groups did was a POSITIVE step towards our nation's development.

And not only does he recognize the efforts of these groups, as governor, he helped promote these groups' causes in his state.

Kerry and LIeberman may have marched with the civil rights group and fought in Congress for women's rights, but when it came time to attend these groups conventions, they were no where to be found. Sending these important constituencies a video tape or empty words is not treating them with respect. Dean made the effort to attend these groups' conventions this year and by doing so, he gave them RESPECT.
