OK, DUers. I think the time has come to stop all the wishful thinking and butt heads with some reality. I'll list what I think has to happen and then I'll state why.
First, the 2 per centers (my phrase) have to drop out of the race. NOW. Yeah, I like what a lot of them have to say. But I don't care which side of the political fence you're on, when you start explaining how 2 per cent means your core is really solid, blah, blah, blah it's spin. And that's all it is. The low number wannabes have to get out and let the outcome be between Dean, Lieberman, Gephardt and Kerry. Like it or not, those are the 4 to slug it out. Which brings me to....
Wesley Clark. The posts regarding Clark have been informative and thought provoking. Truth be told, I am impressed with what I've read. Nonetheless, my feeling is as follows: let him declare something. Anything. If he's in the race for the top spot, he needs to say so NOW. Or not. Or say he'd be willing to be VP, or Sec of State. But he has to declare something. Then we can get on with finding out who our Pres candidate will be and we need to know soon. Why?...
George W Bush and the republican party, that's why. I'll explain. I want Bush gone in 2004 as much as the next DUer. And while his numbers may be dropping they are still good enough to win. (Before your fingers scorch the keyboard, ask yourself if you are just wishful thinking that your candidate can beat him. Because wishful thinking will kill us.) Now I care about a lot of the issues that Bush is on the wrong side of like the economy (his deficits are disastrous) the environment (beyond despicable) joblessness (lies about how things are improving; yeah, right) and other issues as well). But here is the most disturbing thing: THE ONLY THING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CARES ABOUT IN 2004 IS KEEPING BUSH IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND THAT, TO PUT IT BLUNTLY, IS THEIR GREATEST STRENGTH. They are raising so much money it boggles the mind. I read a figure that Bush may have 200,000,000 to campaign with. That figure is erroneous. He already HAS that much. I believe the number could go twice as high. And what are we doing? Well we're looking at candidates with 2 per cent of jack shit and saying THEY CAN DO IT!! What is this? High School? Let's get the candidate identified who's going to be running against Bush (and it WON'T be any of the 2 per centers, believe me), coalesce behind that candidate and get this incompetent, undeserving clueless clown out of the Oval Office. It's what we all want. Wishful thinking is not the way to achieve it.
