11. He interrupted her...
said he took offense at her characterizations of his announcement tour as a re-launch and said that "if Howard Dean thinks travelling to 50 countries is foreign policy expericen that just shows how little forgeign pllicy experience he actually has."
Take that!

19. Yah
Tourist Vermont Maple Syrup with my Waffles Diplomacy...

Salon (possibly in its death throes) pulls out a terrific profile of Howard Dean, the horse I'm backing for the Democratic nomination.

I have been concerned about his foreign policy stance. He's distinguished himself as the most anti-war candidate extant. But let's see how he says he would do it:

"As I've said about eight times today," he says, annoyed -- that Saddam must be disarmed, but with a multilateral force under the auspices of the United Nations. If the U.N. in the end chooses not to enforce its own resolutions, then the U.S. should give Saddam 30 to 60 days to disarm, and if he doesn't, unilateral action is a regrettable, but unavoidable, choice.
Easy to say at this late date, but imagine if we'd gone to the UN in September with a timetable, backed with a clear threat of unilateral action. I think things would have gone rather differently.

3. Except still crying 'Dean has no experience'!
Forgetting the fact Clinton was only a governor. Forgetting the fact CARTER was only a governor. Hell, EVEN FDR was a governor before he became president.

Pisses me off he keeps crying about that.

6. Kerry does have more federal experience than Dean
we should expect that he will criticize Dean on this valid point. We know that Dean certainly has enough experience to make a good president. But Kerry should be expected to emphasize his relative abundance of experience vis-a-vis Dean.

13. No doubt.
But one must also realize we've done well in the past with governor-to-white house presidents.

17. Absolutely
It's just that I wouldn't expect Kerry to keep silent on this difference between them - I wouldn't expect Dean not to capitalize on differences, either.

Have we?
Jimmy Carter, love him though I do, and the failure with Iran and the Iran Hostage situation, and double digit inflation. Ronald Reagan, and Iran Contra, BCCI, and God knows what else thats still hidden. situation. Bill Clinton, with his penis, and the months of attack on the party due to his personal life... And now Governor Bush. Every one has led us into some kind of national crisis without the skill or ability to get out of it.

No matter what, if a candidates past, particularly their past records as Governor can remain sealed, there seems to alway be SOMETHING about the candidate that pops up later, that should have been know before hand in order to avert the problems. If governors are going to run for president, their entire past record as governors should be completely opened for scrutiny.

Even Clinton when examining the problems he had as president blamed them on him having been a governor, He stated that he could have gotten national health passed in if he dealt with the economy first, and then waited a year of so to begin going for Clinton Care...national health and then he definately would have gotten that passed. Stated that he ignored the advice of long term senators and congressmen regarding that and so failed to accomplish what could have been accomplished. Every problem in the last twenty five years are the result of inexperienced governors and their lack of inside knowledge and experience.

Sorry, the record of governors as presidents in the last years has been pretty dismal.

Even a young senator named John Kennedy faced far greater difficulties and averted many serious problems that would have baffled any of these governors. He did it with great skill, and made far less errors, though his lack of experience caused some, they were far less in scope. He was wise enough to want to get out of Vietnam, and was about to order doing so before he was assasinated.

25. What about FDR? Wilson? Eisenhower?
All three never served in the senate or house. To me all were pretty solid presidents. In fact Wilson and FDR both were presidents during the two great wars.

33. You've got to be kidding me
will you take ANY position in order to talk down Dean? (Wait, don't answer that).

Your brilliant analysis leaves us with the outstanding and trouble-free presidencies of Bush I, Nixon, and Ford. Certainly no scandals or problems with their presidencies.

30. Not during "wartime." America traditionally does not..
throw out a wartime president. If they are going to fire bush, you will need to provide a credible replacement with national security bonafides.

Although the economy is always important, international affairs is probably tops right now. That's why this year is different from 1992.

21. He Fared Better Than Al Smith
FDR was elected Governor of New York State in 1928 and 1930 for two two-year terms. Smith was elected governor of New York for four terms (1919-20, 1923-28). Smith lost to Hoover, FDR defeated Hoover and went on to become one of the most beloved Presidents in Democratic Party in history. If elected, Smith surely would have been, as well. It was mostly his Catholicism and opposition to Prohibition that did him in.

32. FDR also had been Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
Edited on Wed Sep-03-03 10:17 PM by Octafish
That was a big Federal job that gave him some practical foreign policy experience. Those other DEMs had some, uh, problems getting the hang of the job. If you think American couldn't afford on-the-job training with those guys, imagine what OJT would mean for America facing World War 4 and 5, let alone Civil War 2.

EDIT: FDR was ASSISTANT Sec Navy. Sorry.

7. He rejected her characterizations
He said he took objection her calling his announcement a re-launch and that it was an official launch. He said, "no, no, no, you know better then that", He explained that Powell came to our committee and told us war was not inevitable, that the administration would seek to build a broad coalition and that the real issue is the President did none of that.

14. Oh for the chance to have seen that
Go Kerry!

I love to see Dean and Kerry both striking out at this administration at the same time.

Though their supporters would love to present this as a zero-sum game (and I suppose, as there are a finite number of delegates for the nomination, at some point it is), if they both get people whipped up about getting Chimpy out of office, there is 50% of the electorate who don't normally vote to be had! Both of them giving the media their due and Chimpy their disdain is going to Rock for the Democratic party.

24. There you go
That's what I want too, which is why I'd like to see EVERYBODY get on the same page on this damn war vote. It is Bush's biggest and most obvious failure and all the candidates need to be free to hammer away at Bush without somebody coming out and zinging them on it. There's plenty of other places to disagree, plenty. The opportunity to bury Bush with this is too great to let Democratic dogfights overshadow Bush and his ineptness.

23. Clinton's Foreign Policy Experience
Although it is largely forgotten, Clinton actually campaigned on foreign policy. He talked about restoring Bosnia to its unified multi-ethnic status, pressuring China to democratize, helping Haitians in despair, rebuilding Somalia, and assisting further in Russia’s reforms.

Although he was a Governor, Clinton was very knowledgable about foreign policy at a time when no one really cared. Bush I had just won the Gulf War, and no one gave a damn about the world outside the US borders.
