Can Kucinich run for both re-election and the WH?
It is my understanding that the Ohio congressional filing deadline is 2 January 2004. Since the presidential race will not be even close to being decided by then, I don't think Kucinich can do both unless he files for Congress while in the process of running for President or I'm wrong about the filing deadline.

It would be a real shame if we lost Kucinich from Congress. :-(

2. God I hope he does
Loosing him in congress behind a bid for the presidency would be a horible loss if he didnt gain the presidency.

3. Lieberman ran for VP and Senate I the same time as I recall.
We haven't had a republican senator is this state since Weicker, and he was, dare I say it, a good republican. He is now an independent. The repugs don't even bother to run in CT.

5. I will try to find out
It is up to the individual states. I must say even if he can now, that could easily change. We have a Republican Gov, Republican House, Republican Senate, and a Republican Supreme Court. In short, he doesn't have a lot of state level friends.

7. Ohio law
Ohio law states that you can run for two seats in the same election, but if you lose one in the primary, you may NOT run on another ticket for that seat in the November election.

Therefore, DK can run for both, and if he loses the primary for Pres, he's still cool for House. He just can't try again at Pres with a different party.

6. Yes, he'll be filing for re-election to his House seat.
In addition to the Presidential bid. As far as I know it's perfectly legal and possible, although I don't know what happens if the candidate wins both elections...that could be an interesting new twist, eh?

I think the way it's always been done in the past is they run for both positions, then if they get the Presidential nomination they pull out of the other elction. Usually there's another Party member running in the local election so there isn't too much damage done.

Edwards has the same plan if I'm not mistaken.

8. I understand that it's legal...
but wouldn't that send a signal of low confidence in the presidential race?

17. He will need that backup plan
because there is no way Kuchinich will even come close to getting the nomination.

11. I think that's how a lot of people are taking it,
but personally that strikes me as comical.

On the one hand they say he's too idealistic, and then when he excercises some pragmatism, he doesn't have any confidence. Damn, people pick a position woudja?*LOL*

10. I don't see any reason for him to give up his House seat when he

doesn't know if he'll get the Democratic nomination.

I did think that Lieberman showed little confidence in Gore by staying in the senatorial race while running for VP.

13. Politics1.com Confirms what you state
The deadline is January 2, 2004

It could be an issue of confidence politically if he files while running, but I think he could legally file, be nominated in the primary and withdraw if he did get the nomination later on.

The issue would be having his name on the Nov 2004 ballot in Ohio for both offices which is probably not allowed. But again, if he gets the nomination, no way he runs for reelection.

14. he could go ahead and file paperwork
and urge another democrat to so there'd be a primary. I don't think DK will be running for POTUS past mid-Feb (or even mid-Jan), but if he DOES get the nom, he'll be able to have a Dem run and replace him. If (when actually...) he doesn't get the nom, the other dem may quit the race, or they'd have a primary where DK would probably win.

16. DK
I'd be disappointed if Dennis DID NOT enter both races. We all know (surely as does Dennis) how important it is that Ohio keeps a Dem for U.S. Representative. However, on the flip side, I'd like to see DK as Ashcrofts replacement to protect our Constitution (but he's not an attorney).

18. I'm not sure
But if I were him I would drop out and keep my congressional seat, because there is no chance he is going to be nominated. Granted, Kucinich is a great guy with great ideas, but he has no chance.

People could you be anymore like a broken record?

Gimme a break already! They ALL still have a chance.

That's all I keep hearing, defeat, over and over and over. Well no, I don't concede and neither does Kucinich.

19. A few points
DK should run for his House seat. Though I think he'll do better than expected, I doubt at this point that he'll be the nominee for the presidency. However, it would be a shame to have him out of the House.

I agree that there should be another candidate as backup for Kucinich, just in case. They could take their names off the ballot once Kucinich loses the nomination. The seat leans strongly for the Democrats (which for all you people who want him to be attorney general, would be a good thing, since in a special election a Democrat would probably win).

I think that this vastly differs from John Edwards and Joe Lieberman's situations. With Edwards, a NC Senate race for a Democrat will require all of his attention. No way will he be able to win both the presidency and a Senate seat. It would be far better to have someone else run for president and Edwards run for the Senate, or have Edwards run for president and Erskine Bowles run for the Senate. Both of those could result in two Democratic victories.

Lieberman should've shown more confidence in his vice presidential election by not running for the Senate. Richard Blumenthal or Rosa DeLauro could've both run and won. There were rumors going around Washington during the recall (when the Senate was all but guaranteed to go to Republicans because of Lieberman's Senate election) that Lieberman would stay in the Senate and that Gore would've appointed Jimmy Carter as VP (the only possible way that the White House and the Senate could've gone to the Democrats).
