Hoffa: Teamsters endorsing Bush "hard to imagine"
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 12:39 PM by CMT
Despite wooing from the White House, Teamsters President James P. Hoffa says Bush doesn't understand the economy or the problems of working families, and it "would be difficult to imagine" the union endrsing him for president next year.

However, the union isn't enthralled with other Democrats running for president, leaving open the possibility that it could remain neutral if Dick Gephardt (who they did endorse) doesn't get the nomination.

3. The untold story so far...
Gephardt's quietly getting one union endorsement after another. Unions bring a lot of shoe leather to a campaign. That will give him some important leverage, regardless of who the nominee is.

Could tip the VP slot his way?

4. But Unions are taking another look at Dean
They don't want a repeat of '84 when they endorsed Mondale and according to John Nichols of the Nation the Communication Workers of America were very enthused by Dean's appearance and there is a possibility the the United Auto Workers might end up endorsing Dean. This is not to underestimate that Gep is doing well among union leaders.
