New Mexico Lt. Governor Diane D. Denish Endorses John Kerry
John Kerry came away from New Mexico with a great debate performance and a great endorsement from New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Diane D. Denish.

Press Release
John Kerry for President
September 5, 2003

ALBUQUERQUE –New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Diane D. Denish today endorsed John Kerry for the Democratic nomination for President.

“No one who is running for president, including George W. Bush, has served his country with more honor and dignity than John Kerry,” said Lieutenant Governor Diane D. Denish. “From defending his country as a Vietnam combat veteran to standing up for Head Start and other programs that aim to lift our people out of poverty, John Kerry is a proven leader and the best choice to lead our nation toward a brighter future.”

Diane D. Denish was the first woman to be elected Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico in November 2002. A former chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, she is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Daniels Fund, which supports early childhood education and other youth programs in New Mexico and the western United States.

1. As New Mexico goes so does the nation
And this will help ensure that NM goes for Kerry.
The people in NM have been right about the popular vote in 22 of the last 23 elections. I believe they went for Gore in 2000 so hence the caveat about the popular vote. Basically, if you win NM you are the president.

3. Kerry sent his campaign people here to talk to and co-opt the leaders.
They didn't want to address the Democratic Party as a whole, which might include talking to just plain folks and addressing their issues. They just wanted the endorsements of the national committeepersons, the office holders like Denish, and the chief high mucketmucks of the Party who have been selected to go to the National Convention.

Around here, ordinary Democrats are FURIOUS with the Kerry campaign, because they see this as an effort to avoid making the case WITH THE PEOPLE, and getting the endorsements WAY TOO EARLY. They see this as a high-handed DLC tactic designed to eliminate candidates the DLC doesn't like and Kerry is seen as the "big money" candidate. So many see this as the next thing to BUYING CONVENTION VOTES because...

only 17 of our electoral votes at the convention are up for selection in our caucus.

KERRY IS DEFINITELY ON THE S*** LIST FOR THE AVERAGE DEMOCRAT here in NM.

4. Kerry just doesn't have the time to go to every single state
He has been very busy kicking his campaign off and trying to go from NE to souther states. Perhaps he doesn't have the time to zip across to the west.

5. Almost every other candidate has been here, even those who are
short of money. But Kerrey sends his people to only talk to the elite of the party. It isn't as if he sent them to set up a campaign organization or to appear before ordinary Democrats to ask them for their votes. He just ASSUMES that they can contact the leaders and they don't have to listen to the people or wait until later in the campaign when some trends are showing that might actually reflect the Democratic voters.

DISGUSTING.Same as the smoke-filled room.

"The DLC insider who's getting a lot of money from the rich folks is obviously the best qualified, so give him your endorsement NOW."

6. Oh, There's Just A Little Bit OF Bulls*t In That, Don't Ya Think?
Let's count the empty populist rhetoric, shall we?

"co-opt the leaders"

"just plain folks"

"chief high mucketmucks"

"ordinary Democrats"

"WITH THE PEOPLE"

"high-handed DLC tactic"

"the "big money" candidate"

"next thing to BUYING CONVENTION VOTES"

"THE AVERAGE DEMOCRAT"

Whew! I'm exhausted!

8. Last County Dem meeting totally outraged by his tactics.
The Vice-Chair reported that they DIDN'T WANT TO SPEAK TO THE PARTY MEMBERS,AND didn't want to speak to them later, just the County chair and the Democratic committeewoman. No one else.

The bare facts. No rhetoric.
So NOW can I talk about his campaign's arrogance and high-handed tactics?
