Because it's solidly in the Repuke column. But I can't see where it would hurt him to do well in the primary here. For one it shows he can get votes in a conservative state.

Coincidentally, former Oklahoma Gov. David Walters headed the Dukakis campaign in his state and now is chairman of Dean's Oklahoma effort.

3. a few points

first, I think Dean can compete in Oklahoma due to his moderate stand on fiscal issues and guns. He has quite a few people according in the state who attend his meetups. He has a good organization in the state and is beginning to air ads in the state.

Second, Dean is doing well in other places other than "new england". For instance he is ahead in polls in California, Maryland, Iowa, and only 1-point behind Edwards in South Carolina.

Third, it is correct he doesn't need to win Oklahoma to stay alive. Lieberman may need to. If Dean does as well as Dukakis did in '88--third place or even second it would be almost as good as a win.
