TWO SENATORS LEAVING VOTES BEHIND
Tuesday September 9, 2003


Tonight, Senator Kerry and Senator Edwards boasted of how they would make education a priority in this nation. Both trumpeted their support for No Child Left Behind while asking where the funding went.

Kerry: "We have a President who's walked away from them, broken his promise and refused to fund No Child Left Behind. I believe that we deserve a President that recognizes until you have equality of education in America, until the federal government is prepared to make up the difference in funding, we do not have a prayer at making real the full promise of our country.

Edwards: "By the way, this no child left behind, this president is leaving millions of kids behind every single day."

However, Senators Kerry and Edwards both missed the vote to fully fund our schools.

Neither was present on March 19, 2003 to cast a vote that would have fully funded NCLB. (Murray Amendment #284, NCLB)

With two more democratic votes one from Kerry and one from Edwards the vote would have been a tie, forcing Dick Cheney to clearly indicate the true extent of the administration's "commitment" to NCLB.

Edwards' campaign has since tried to spin their candidate's truancy by claiming that a week later, a "similar vote came up, and authorization of full funding passed with Edwards' support." Unfortunately, the vote Edwards and Kerry did make the following week was not for full funding, but for only bits and pieces of education funding. The opportunity to win full funding had, unfortunately, already passed.

So in short, if our nation's children are not getting the quality education that they deserve, it's partly because this March, Kerry and Edwards were off somewhere playing hooky.

If you want to criticize Senator Kerry's voting record in the Senate bring it on. He was one of only 14 senators who voted for an ammendment to include gays in human rights legislation in the Senate. He blocked drilling in ANWAR. He lead the investigation into Iran Contra. He voted against the tax cuts. Well I could go on.

Tell us about the IWR...he seemed to have a bit of difficulty with it tonight.

Also explain the many votes the Senator has missed this session. I think he's missed about 60%, right?

I may not be backing him as my primary candidate, but I'd sure be proud of him if he won.

It's possible to vote and run for office. If it isn't then maybe the candates should ask themselves a question: who is it I work for? Myself or the People?

Give me a break. That's a gross distortion. Kerry has not missed 60% of his Senate votes. The fact is, these guys are rarely able to get to Congress these days, at least not all at the same time. The good Dr. has no job, they do and they do their best. Are you contending that Kerry doesn't care about children's education? Give me a break. He's been fighting for the United States since he was a soldier and you're going to try and tar him because he missed one vote. Sorry, I just don't buy your argument. It's mean and I don't think anyone seriously believes that somehow Kerry and Edwards don't care about childhood education.

It's too bad you are so desperate that you have to revert to these tactics. Maybe you ought to think about whether you are supporting the right candidate if you are so worried about him that you revert to tactics like these.

He missed an opportunity for the Dems to stand in unity for education and to FORCE the Bush admin to oppose it. That would have benefitted ALL the Dems.

Other Democratic presidential aspirants also have missed votes, but to a lesser degree than Gephardt. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) failed to add his voice in 63 instances this year, 34 percent of Senate votes. (Not included in this total are two votes he missed in February due to prostate surgery.)

6. The Senators and Congressmen know exactly when they

need to be there for a vote. Do you think Daschle doesn't know in advance how many votes he has? Do you think Edwards, Kerry, Lieberman are not in constant contact with their aides and with Daschle?

Your last sentence makes no sense, the vote was lost.

I'm very disappointed that Dean and his supporters use Repub talking points and tactics to gain support.
