Bill Hotaling, owner of New York-based consulting firm Noreast Technology, was among those who were surprised to be receiving e-mail from the Dean campaign.

"I got the Dean message at an e-mail address that I have not used in several years, and I did not sign up with Dean for anything," said Hotaling. "I was very surprised to see Dean sending spam. I can't imagine him being so tech savvy if he is resorting to that.

"My impression? I hate spam, so I was not happy they spammed me," added Hotaling. "If he did in fact send those e-mails from his campaign, then yes it would impact my opinion of him and his campaign."

Dean lied about the pot issue. He says he opposes it because there's not enough science. Even Nixon's commission advocated totally re-legalising it, so the idea that there's 'not enough science' is nonsense. Even 30 years ago, science had a better understanding of marijuana than it did of aspirin.

Dennis came into office with the city deeply in debt because of quasi-criminal behavior by the privately-owned power company. They were trying to do a get-rich-quick scheme, and he was elected because of his promise to stop them. He stopped them. In doing so, he saved Cleveland residents $200M to date, and it can only get better.

Gov. Dean has been consistent about this issue. Marijuana is an illegal drug. Period.

Dean wants to commission a FDA study to determine if marijuana does have legitimate medicinal uses. If it's determined that it does, he's said he'll support it as a treatment for certain medical conditions.

It SHOULD be treated like every other drug. If it had medicinal uses, it'll be approved for those conditions.

Do you actually believe what you're saying? Have you thought about it? Saying 'Marijuana is an illegal drug. Period' is utterly inane. It's an 'illegal drug' because, unlike oregano or catnip, it has been declared to be illegal. There is no science behind that at all. None. There was quite a lot of racism, and classism, but not one damn bit of science.

Dean's consistency has been the consistency of an elitist, racist Drug Warrior, not a scientist or physician. You should be apologising for his stance, if you have any respect at all for science and good sense.

i'm all for legalization of pot or at least decriminalization of it, but you don't have a chance in hell of getting elected if that's what you're advocating. he has stated many times that it's something that should be treated through rehab not prison. that's a step in the right direction and i think it's one that most of America is willing to recognize. legalization is not. once we can get America to see that it's not so dangerous then we can start talking about legalization, but that's not happening anytime soon. i'm glad kucinich is out there talking about his ideology because it's beautiful, but it's a beauty that a relatively small percentage of us recognize.

I'm on your side. I think the criminalization of pot is stupid, and its origin was based on lies and racism.

That doesn't however negate the fact that pot is a drug, and can be detrimental to users who need to operate stuff like cars, much in the same way as alcohol. Pot doesn't make users beligerant like alcohol, so IMHO, it's a great deal safer. It should however be regulated much in the same way alcohol is: age restrictions and equipment use restrictions (ie, you can't drive, operate a forklift etc).

I still stand by my statements about oregano and catnip however. That analogy is bogus, and doesn't bring your point across at all.

I'm not debating the merits of marijuana legalization, I'm making a statement. The issue is NOT the legal status of recreational marijuana use. It's about the use of marijuana as part of a MEDICAL treatment program.

Gov. Dean has stated that he's not inclined to support the use of an illegal drug as a medical treatment without an FDA study that proves that it is better than currently available, legal treatments. I may think that crack is a great cure for the chicken pox. Wouldn't you say it was silly to endorse the use of crack as a medical treatment without proving that crack was the best available substance?

Again, this has NOTHING to do with the legalization of recreational marijuana use. That's another issue entirely (which I don't think has anything to do with racism, by the way).

I posted a pointer to a medical-mj literature survey that includes about 600 citations to peer-reviewed medical literature. Claiming, as Dean did, that there isn't enough science is totally without foundation in fact. There is MUCH more understanding of mj today than there was of aspirin until a few years ago, yet aspirin was the most-prescribed drug EVEN THOUGH aspirin was known to be a substance that can be fatally abused and mj is known not to be.


Unless you want to postulate that mj was made illegal as a random, motiveless act, then the only thing that makes sense is racism. Under the influence of democratisation and the collapse of class barriers secondary to the Depression, it had started to make its way from the Black and Brown communities into the White. So, to stop that, a mythology was created ('Reefer Madness') to support the criminalisation of its use. This was in the '30s, a period during which 'left' and 'right' forces were in strong conflict, and criminalisation of mj was a weapon in that conflict (as were other laws prohibiting 'race mixing' of one kind or another).

1) Dean said that he would be in favor of the use of medical marijuana if an FDA-conducted study affirmed it to be e better treatment than current, legal treatments. He further said he'd commission such a study. If it's such a foregone conclusion that marijuana is a great medical tool, it should be approved for medical use within the next few years.

2) I'm not saying that marijuana was made illegal "as a random, motiveless act". It is a drug (well, THC is) which has behavior-altering properties and does NOT have a strong lobby. Alcohol also has harmful properties, but it has a strong lobby behind it. From a purely "medical" position, we should probably ban alcohol sales before we legalize marijuana. My point is that marijuana, like opiates and the rest (including alcohol), IS a "mind-altering" substance and DOES have health consequences. Alcohol has been (wrongly, from a purely practical standpoint) treated differently, but that doesn't serve as an arguement for the legalization of marijuana or any other drug.

3) The "Reefer Madness" strategy was meant to address the percieved moral decay of the time (allegedly perpetrated by the younger generation). The target of choice was marijuana; not because of any racial issue, but because it was seeing increased use by young people as a recreational drug.

Were there racial issues being addressed in this country at the same time? Of course. That does NOT make marijuana's legal status a racial issue.

It CERTAINLY does NOT mean that having reservations about supporting the use of MEDICAL marijuana makes you a racist.
