CA State Senate calls on Davis to apologize for accent remark
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 10:24 AM by Freddie Stubbs
SACRAMENTO - The state Senate passed a resolution Tuesday that calls on Gov. Gray Davis to apologize for joking about the accent of GOP recall candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was the first time in decades that legislators formally asked a sitting governor to apologize.

Republican Senate Leader Jim Brulte said he brought up the issue Tuesday only after Davis' office told him there would be no apology for remarks the Democratic governor made over the weekend.

Four Democrats, including Fremont Sen. Liz Figueroa, joined with 15 Republicans to approve a symbolic resolution that calls on Davis to apologize ``for his anti-immigrant remarks.'' The measure passed by 19-2 vote.

``This is just a gentle reminder that he is held to a higher standard,'' Figueroa said.

1. Boy, are they ever shafting him this month
First they hand him the bill allowing illegal aliens to get driver licenses (giving him a no-win choice), now this.

His own party has turned on him. Unbelievable.

5. I guess you don't live here
Davis is pathetic.

Yes on recall, Yes on Bustamante.

6. I live in San Diego
Davis is indeed pathetic, but I think we should let him finish his term then let history trash him. We have a right-wing radio guy here, Roger Hedgecock, who has said Davis will demonstrate every day why he is being recalled. Hedgecock is right about that, but the Democratic Party and Democrat-heavy legislature has done nothing to help Davis.

8. Should we let him trash the state in the process?
I'm all for democracy, but I think it's a bit ironic that Davis is demonstrating why he's being recalled and not coming up with ideas on how to fix the budget mess.

Part of the problem is the guy just can't make friends. When you can't make friends with your own party, you and your state are in trouble.

9. The budget that covers the remainder of Davis' term is already signed
It's too late. We are screwed, blued, and tattooed. Davis is term-limited out in 2004.

Part of the problem is the guy just can't make friends. When you can't make friends with your own party, you and your state are in trouble.

Affirmative.

12. Roger Hedgecock
The irony of this is that he had to resign in disgrace from his position as mayor of San Diego back in the 80's.

2. this is not the type of thing that Davis needed
he should have just apologized for his joke over the weekend and it would have died away. All we need is that sexist jerk Arnold to gain a sympathy vote.

4. What was the last time the legis asked a sitting gov to apologize?
I will try to find out to see what the standard is that these 'lawmakers" are trying to live up to.

7. It passed 19-2 - 19 dems abstained - giving the repubs their resol.
When will democrats stop eating themselves?

Is the democratic party wondering why so many are turning away from the party? They have to ask?

11. A lot of these guys have a large number of immigrants as constituents
They probably don't want to get their constituents riled up.

Appernetly they are not afraid of retaliation from Governor Davis. The fact that these guys did not vote to support Davis shows what they think of his chances of survival.

13. Republicans have won the right to win California!!!
If you "Democrats" would look at the Republican Playbook you will see that they rally behind their candidate when the time comes, even if they do disagree with them! Would you rather have Arnie as governor and let the Republicans use his star image to further their reich wing agenda??? Either you oppose the recall or let the Rethugs take this country!!!

16. We are still the Majority!!!
We should give them anything...they deserve to lose and will lose. Cruz has done a wonderful job at staying above the fray (Conejo is like a mouse...) and since we are united, we MAY lose Gray but we will get his number 2...good enough...

In other words, we still win, they still lose...

14. This is stupid
He said it was a joke and he's already apologized. Arnold needs to apologize for his racist support of 187 and his racist opposition to the driver's license bill.

15. Gray "Trent Lott" Davis
Who gave Davis thoses talking points??? To say it was "just a joke" is a cop-out. Isn't that what Trent Lott say -- "its just a mistake/joke."
