NC: Senate Race Expected To Be Far Different From 2002
<snip>

But despite the early similarities, campaign consultants and political analysts watching the race don't expect a repeat of the 2002 Senate race in North Carolina.

<snip>

Bowles had no answer for the popularity Dole had gained after years of television appearances and speeches on behalf of her husband, former senator and GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole, and her own presidential bid.

<snip>

"Burr represents a different kind of challenge than Dole for the Democrats. He doesn't have the glitz of Dole, but he fits the mold of the modern Republican Party," Guillory said.

Burr will also be running in a state in which joblessness -- particularly manufacturing job losses -- has worsened and become a more volatile issue.

In other words...we have a fairly decent shot at holding this seat.

1. Great
Burr is more of a typical Republican, but he won't have Dole's free media machine. I think that Bowles should be able to pick this seat up. Unlike last time, this time Bowles has the name recognition. Hopefully, North Carolina's penchant for wanting senators from both parties will continue.

2. If Edwards is out, who runs?
Bowles might be the man. When Burr accuses him of being in the Clinton Administration, Bowles can remind North Carolinains that the economy of the state was in fine shape during the Clinton years.

3. What does he mean Dole's large margin?
She pulled in less that 55 percent of the vote and everybody in the country knows who she is.

4. Tossup
It's a fifty-fifty race between Bowles and Burr. At this point, this is our second most vulnerable seat, behind Georgia, and slightly ahead of South Carolina.
