Worked a campaign table for Dean at Community Day today . . .

Glad to see all the bitchiness on this board still abounds.

I worked for a few hot hours this afternoon at the Dean table with others in the community.

They ran out of Dean pins in less than 2 hours. I gave mine away within 5 minutes of being at the table. We got lots of people coming up and wanting to know more, getting information about the meetups, telling us Bush horror stories, asking us why we liked Dean (my two reasons: He's not an idealogue, he's the best fighter the Democrats have had in a long time), pretty much really enthusiastic. Young and old, etc.

What a ground swell of (coming) change this administration has brought upon itself. They will reap the whirlwind in just over a year.

Anyway, just wanted to post something positive.

3. This coming weekend

for the Dean visibility day, a bunch of us in Vegas are going to dangle a huge Dean sign over the pedestrian bridge between MGM and NYNY. I can't wait! I'm glad you enjoyed your Dean Day! It's so much fun getting involved :party:

Great going!

Members from my Meetup group set up a table yesterday in front of Giant for six hours and handed out Dean literature and voter registration materials. The called me halfway through and asked that I bring more Dean materials because they were running out. They also gave out LOTS of voter registration forms (I'd say easily over 100).

I know this isn't as important as shooting poison arrows at each other here on DU, but it was satisfying nonetheless.

That's a great story - I think we'd be interested in doing something just like that, but don't most supermarkets discourage people from pamphleteering, soliciting, etc., on or near their premises? I'd love to do it, though.

7. We got permission from the managers at GIant first

We were willing to compromise and just hand out voter reg stuff if the managers balked at us promoting Dean. They were fine with it. The volunteers had to stay a certain distance from the door, but that was the only requirement.

Now, our outreach coordinator did ask if they could do it at Wal-Mart and was turned down, surprise surprise. They said they don't allow anyone to set up a table outside their store to make money. We were not taking contributions, just handing out literature for Dean and voter registration forms. Again, we would've compromised and just did the voter reg. stuff if they objected to us promoting Dean.

So, it wouldn't hurt to ask the store managers if you can set up a table...

We're also looking into setting up a table at a local community college and handing out Dean lit/voter reg forms.

I did some tabling for Dean myself last week.

People are fairly bursting at the seams to talk about how messed up things are under this misadministration.

I sensed a great longing from people to have the opportunity to spout off about it, and was happy to accomodate them.

How lovely it was when people thanked me for doing what I was doing and how satisfying it was when I registered people to vote.

We can do it, we can take our country back!

9. Negativity? What Negativity?

Kerry dropped a bomb this morning, and the response was typical. The Kerry people said blah blah blah, the Dean people said blah blah blah, and everybody believes the same thing they did when they woke up this morning.

Sounds like you had a blast! What beats blasting Bush all day!

That's a great picture. I did my graduate work in a hospital - it reminds me of those days.

The table was cool - much more fun than I thought it would be.

You're right about the blah blah blah. Everyone is behaving as predicted. Dean is responding in the role of the presumed front runner, Kerry is behaving in the role of someone just a bit behind, nothing too surprising or staggering about it.

Do we know what Clark is going to do on Friday? I'm about to leave town again next week - I'll miss DU for almost 10 days, if I can't get to the web. Blah. Keep 'em honest, Doc.

12. Looks Like Clark Is Gonna Be #10

Honestly, I've been playing out various scenarios of how this will affect the race, but I really can't say. It could even bump Gep or Edwards into the lead, who knows?

I think Clark seems like a nice enough fella with strong military credentials, but my gut feeling is that he won't be able to calm people's nerves about their jobs. I don't mean that as disrespect, because he may come out with some great stuff, but for now he seems a little lightweight on domestic issues. I've been asking the Clark people for some more in-depth info, but it seems they don't know too much either outside of what the website says.

In short, he has few negatives, and I'm holding out to see what his positives are.

If he isn't going to run, why would he want any of us to care about his "announcement" or whatever it is?

I think it is too late in the process for this. I think Clark is potentially a good nominee and President, and he's definitely intelligent, but we're only about 6 months away from many of the primaries. To jump in at this point is strange - as someone has pointed out, by the time many candidates get to this point, they have spent years establishing ties to the party, exploratory committees, etc.

I think a Clark candidacy will hurt both Dean and Kerry in the short run. The more the merrier, I suppose, but if his organization is not well put-in-place and he manages to squeak through the primaries, it could be a rough general.
