When I saw Dean speak in Chicago at Navy Pier, he finished up and I thought he'd be shuffled away out of the ungodly heat. My friend and I started to leave, walking in the opposite direction and suddly Dean was standing right next to us. He had to clambor past chairs and a few other obstacles to get into a position to shake people's hands and converse with them.

I was shocked to say the least. I don't think anyone would have blamed him for sprinting to air conditioning as that was exactly what I was doing.

But the weather forecast kept the crowd way down - perhaps a 1000 in the square - a few thousand more outside the barrier.

They openned the area at 11 am but Dean began at 12:15 -- no real way to walk about so I did not see Will or Matcom or the usual DU suspects.

Did not have feel of a political rally - Dean is not as smooth as JFK, Bobby Kenndy, or Ted, or Sharpton - but compares OK with the rest of the field. And the Deanies feel/act dedicated.

It was a nice way to spend lunch!

My friend there from Minnesota said that his delegation was sitting right behind the Massachusetts delegation when Dean spoke, and he said at first they all sat on their hands, but eventually they could not resist getting up and cheering like everyone else. I doubt that they became Dean supporters...they seemed pretty loyal to Kerry...but it was kind of cool how even they were unable to just sit quietly when Dean spoke.

But it does not necessarily mean much...we did not see a ton of Dean bumper stickers when we were in Vermont...there is not much of a point in putting them on their cars unless they go into New Hampshire a lot, because if anyone has never heard of someone who has been their governor for 11 years, they probably are not going to vote or pay attention anyway. So Massachusetts people might feel no need to put Kerry bumper stickers on their cars for the same reason...unless they are near the New Hampshire border. Is that where you live? If you live near the NH border and see more Dean signs than Kerry signs, that is surprising.

I do understand what you are saying...we do have a lack of diversity at rallies, but it is a problem we are working hard to overcome, and it is getting better. The last few events I have attended have been a lot more diverse than the earlier ones. And I think other campaigns are having some trouble with this too...a Kucinich person told me that they are struggling to make their group more diverse, and I am not sure how Kerry's campaign is doing on that front but I saw pictures of his kickoff speech in South Carolina and the crowd looked pretty white.

It is true that sometimes supporters, myself included, drive several hours to see him speak, but we do that on our own and the campaign does not pay for it or provide transportation or anything. They do sometimes bus or fly people to New Hampshire to do door-knocking, but not to attend rallies. If they did "truck us in", I'd probably be going to the rally in NYC tomorrow, but since a) I have a quiz, and b) I can't afford to spend $144 for a roundtrip train ticket, I am not going.
