The Kucinich bill to repeal the USA Patriot Act
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 07:57 PM by genius
DEADLINE FOR THE "PATRIOT ACT"
Congressman Dennis Kucinich continued his leadership today
on Capitol Hill today by introducing the first comprehensive
bill to repeal offensive sections of the misnamed "USA PATRIOT
Act." The Kucinich bill -- called the "Benjamin Franklin True
Patriot Act" -- is already supported by the ACLU, NAACP, a
Jewish group, an Islamic group, and 20 members of Congress.

Kucinich's bill would repeal sections of the original "PATRIOT
Act," that authorize 'sneak and peak' searches; warrantless
library, medical, educational, and financial record searches;
and the detention and deportation of non-citizens without
meaningful judicial review. Passage would be the final deadline
-- or death -- for the "PATRIOT Act."

Rep. Kucinich is the only presidential candidate who voted
against the "PATRIOT Act" in October, 2001. The other Democrats
in Congress currently running for president all voted for it --
and Howard Dean has said, "I never criticize them for that" in
view of the post-9/11 pressure. Congressman Kucinich stood up
to the pressure then...and now.

At a news conference today, Kucinich invoked the words of Ben
Franklin, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase
a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Kucinich added: "Will we stand by as the Administration formulates
a second more dangerous "PATRIOT Act" because, in the President's
words, 'the first bill didn't go far enough'? Or will we step
back from this atmosphere of fear and work to restore our basic
freedoms and rights? With the introduction of the True Patriot
Act, I say we take back our Constitution."

DEADLINE FOR DOLLARS
Sept 30 presents another deadline -- the quarterly fundraising
deadline for presidential candidates. This is the time for true
Patriots to support this unique candidate who is taking his battle
against the "PATRIOT Act" nationwide

Many of you have already donated. If so, please send this
email to every civil libertarian or Libertarian or Green or lover
of privacy and individual rights you know and ask them to
support a man who (whether you agree with him on all issues) is
standing up for your basic freedoms on the campaign trail and on
Capitol Hill.

It's quick and easy to donate:

7. shrug I guess so man
I dont like the idea myself actually. Which brings me to a point thats why we need someone like Kucinich because he will appoint liberal justices. That said anything with Kucinich as pres would be good but I dont think Dean/Kucinich would work.

8. Studs Terkel: "Kucinich is like Poe's purloined letter--right there on
the table as we helplessly play Inspector Clouseau goofily searching elsewhere."

<edit from Page 5 of article>

Now, in the year 2002, Ohio has given us another, of a somewhat different stripe. I doubt whether he'll ever make People magazine's list of the most beautiful people, but the blue-collar Kucinich is the only one who can win back the blue-collar Reagan Democrats, among the other disenchanted, and the disfranchised. He talks the language they understand and, at 55, with a remarkable eloquence.

Imagine him in a televised, coast-to-coast debate with Dubya. Blood wouldn't flow, but it would be a knockout in the first round, and we'd have an honest-to-God working-class President for the first time in our history. It's a crazy thought, of course, but it's quite possible, considering the roller-coaster nature of our times.

Since plagiarism is à la mode these days, let me steal the closing passage from the Rev. William Sloane Coffin's invocation at a Yale commencement during the Vietnam War: "Oh God, take our minds and think through them, take our lips and speak through them, take our hearts and set them on fire." I'll add a brief benediction: Kucinich is the man to light the fire. Amen.

Postscript. Obviously, I haven't touched on ways and means. Obviously, the big dough will not be there. But this could be the catapult for the hundreds of grassroots groups on a thousand and one issues to coalesce behind one banner. Jim Hightower has touched on that often. And Michael Moore's book Stupid White Men is a bestseller. And there's a whole new generation of kids, not just the students, but bewildered, lost blue-collar kids. And, strangely enough, it can be done the old-fashioned way, shoe leather and bell-ringing, as well as e-mails. It could be that exciting. Nicholas von Hoffman once observed that when people get active, they get the feeling they count. Kucinich is like Poe's purloined letter--right there on the table as we helplessly play Inspector Clouseau goofily searching elsewhere.

end

10. Count on Dennis.
One of the many things you can count on Dennis for. When he says he wants to make it happen, he actually acts. He introduces legislation to back up his platform. He doesn't hesitate to bring the issues to the table or the floor. Refreshing, isn't it?

12. Come on, people, the man is a true patriot in our midst!
Edited on Wed Sep-24-03 11:50 PM by kimchi
Everyone bitches and moans about the Patriot Act,how the Anti-Christ Bush will bring Armageddon in the middle east and we'll be eating in breadlines, if not behind wire--and we're all doomed.

And Kucinich makes a plan and follows through trying to save our democracy, and everyone just says "Aw, I think he's great, but he can't win."

We can at least send the guy an e-mail and thank him.

end rant

edit: This is not to any poster on this thread, I was just upset that there weren't many more acknowledgements of his contributions. Could also be I've missed a thread or two. It's late.

15. Right person at the right time
Sometimes in history the right person will be there to fill the need, to lead and inspire. Dennis is that person for our time. How can anyone honestly look at his ideas and positions and not want to live in a country governed by these ideals? I don't see attacks on his positions but always on his "unelectability", his stature, his voice, etc. Have an open mind and listen to what he has to say. Our country cannot continue on it's present path, we can do better with Kucinich, the true Peace canidate.

are on his "unelectablity", his stature you mean his height right, his voice yeah that one gets me too, his looks is another one well guys are we in a fucking beauty paegant, and the one that bugs me also is his last name god forbid that we dont all have Anglo Saxon names. 18. It's early yet
in the process, I think as more people learn of Dennis and his ideas his grassroots support will continue to grow. Hopefully we will reach critical mass before the primaries. I'm trying to be patient but am also sick of hearing about the unelictability of DK. Sounds like some people are frightened of Dennis. Peace.
