Gen. Shelton shocks Celebrity Forum, says he won't support Clark for president

Retired General H. Hugh Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on 9/11, shared his recollection of that day and his views of the war against terrorism with the Foothill College Celebrity Forum audience at Flint Center, Sept. 11 and 12.

His review of that historic event and his 38 years in the military kept the audience's rapt attention throughout. But it was his answer to a question from the audience at the end that shocked his listeners.

"What do you think of General Wesley Clark and would you support him as a presidential candidate," was the question put to him by moderator Dick Henning, assuming that all military men stood in support of each other. General Shelton took a drink of water and Henning said, "I noticed you took a drink on that one!"

"That question makes me wish it were vodka," said Shelton. "I've known Wes for a long time. I will tell you the reason he came out of Europe early had to do with integrity and character issues, things that are very near and dear to my heart. I'm not going to say whether I'm a Republican or a Democrat. I'll just say Wes won't get my vote."

9. He absolutely did NOT say that
He said he would not say whether he was a Republican or a Democrat but that Clark would not get his vote.

2. Khephra, someone posted this earlier
it turns out Mr. Shelton is a Republican who thinks Bush is doing a great job, so his dissing of Clark is entirely expected.

5. Has he elaborated?
"I will tell you the reason he came out of Europe early had to do with integrity and character issues, things that are very near and dear to my heart."

What sort of things are "near and dear" to Gen. Shelton's heart?

Integrity issues?
Character issues?

Does anyone know what he means? Recalling Clark suprised a lot of people, and I think we deserve the real reason. I know, in my dreams!

6. Considering How Shelton Is a Thug Shill
And considering how Clark and Shelton had many bitter fights when they worked with each other, this is about as surprising as Ann Richards saying she won't support Bush.

8. Shelton is anything but a thug
You sound like supporters of some other candidates who just attack the legitimacy of anyone who attacks their client. Shelton is more of a "gentle soul" than most military men. You need to face it: Clark wasn't liked by the guys under him or the guy over him. And the guy over him says the issues are integrity and character. I think it would be more useful to find out what he meant than just attack him.

10. where are you getting your information that he wasn't liked by...
"the guys under him and over him"? That's an incredibly broad statement. General Barry McCaffery stated in the NYT Sept 25th that:

<snip>

"Having watched some of the most senior people in the international community in the last decade, I can say he's one of the most brilliant, thoughtful, articulate and experienced public servants I've ever met in my life."

7. maybe he is jealous
i don't know for sure but it's kind of amusing to think of a bunch of military guys especially generals jealous of the "popular one". and maybe shelton is jealous nobody would or wants to draft him for any office.
