Democratic presidential candidate Dick Gephardt on Wednesday picked up the backing of the Laborers' International Union of North America but downplayed expectations that he could win the coveted endorsement of the AFL-CIO...
Officials with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said its president, Gerald McEntee, favored postponing a decision until December in order to consider retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark. Clark, of Arkansas, declared his candidacy Sept. 17.
McEntee had quietly promoted Kerry as the field's most electable candidate last summer. Kerry spokesman Robert Gibbs said AFSCME's decision to hold off on endorsing wasn't a slight to Kerry.
"The decision to postpone is based on the decision to have General Clark in the race and evaluate the strength or lack thereof of his candidacy," Gibbs said.
