LA Gov: Jindal pulls into lead (Mason-Dixon)
Louisiana Gannett survey also indicates Blanco may not make the runoff

John Hill Posted on October 2, 2003 BATON ROUGE - Republican Bobby Jindal, R-Baton Rouge, increases his lead, and there's a statistical tie for second place between Democrats Kathleen Blanco of Lafayette and Richard Ieyoub of Lake Charles in the Louisiana gubernatorial race, according to The Times/Louisiana Gannett poll.

Blanco, front-runner in many earlier surveys, also might not make the runoff in Saturday's voting, indicates the poll Mason Dixon Polling and Research Inc. conducted Monday and Tuesday nights for The Times in Shreveport, The News-Star in Monroe, The Town Talk in Alexandria, The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette and the Opelousas Daily World.

The poll of 625 voters shows Jindal has increased his lead to 27 percent. Blanco has 16 percent and Ieyoub 15 percent, both well within the poll's 4-point margin of error. The margin of error means if all voters were polled, their responses would not likely vary by more than 3.5 points up or down from those polled.

Democrat Claude "Buddy" Leach of Lake Charles is fourth with 11 percent. And Democrat Randy Ewing of Quitman is fifth with 8 percent.

1. great
I had high hopes for this race to cushion the bad news from California, but now it looks like we may come up empty again.

3. the good news is
that Jingl has 27% and the other four top vote getters are democrats so hopefully they will come together and defeat him in November.

4. Of course, look what happened in the Senate race
We have no guarantee of that happening.

I had hopes for this race. Now we must face the real possibility of a net loss of 3 governorships this fall. :-(

5. LA governor already GOP so not losing something we had
Our current governor is "David Duke Lite" Mike Foster, whose sole legacy after 8 years in office is a repeal of motorcycle helmet laws and paying one of David Duke's fines for him. Bobby Jindal, as you probably already know, is apparently just a Mike Foster tool. Sad to say.

Any time we get a governor who is at all progressive, the yahoos spend all their time and effort in trying to get him jailed, so it is little wonder that we get some of the dubious candidates that we do.

I don't think Blanco is a very exciting candidate, a bit of a DINO. I'm thinking we have a better chance with Ieyoub. But I've made no final decision yet.

why should david duke pay income tax on a six figure sale of his mailing list, that is so unfair, taxes are for democrats

7. Correct
But it would be nice to have at least one pick-up to offset other losses.

6. The big difference is that Jindal only has 27 percent
Landrieu had 46 percent. I still think that a Democrat will win this, the question right now is who?

9. True and if you add up all of the poll numbers for the...
Democrats they get 51%! That's a great start! You have to just rally them in November and pick up some undecideds and you can get 55%-45% victory for the Democratic Candidate!

8. Buddy Leach
is the only one who comes close to sounding like a liberal, so I plan to vote for him. But he used to be a conservative and something about him makes me not trust him. Anybody got any info. to share?

10. Some news for people to remember
Woody Jenkins won the primary in 1996 and then lost to general election to Mary Landrieu. In the weeks before the primary the GOP united behind Jenkins and he pushed ahead of Landrieu. But then Landrieu won the runoff.

So I would not get that alarmed here quite yet.

11. Other relevant history
In 1986, before winning his Senate seat, John Breaux came in second to W. Henson Moore. Then Breaux went on to win the runoff 53-47.

In 1996 Woody Jenkins won the primary against Mary Landrieu. But in November he ran second to her and lost by 5,000 votes.

So just remember that just because someone finishes first in the primary doesn't guarantee victory in November. And if these two examples are any indication of the future then Jindal should not celebrate finishing first.

12. Downticket races look good
Mitch Landrieu is in the lead for Lt. Governor. He's the only major Dem in the race, so with his name recognition he may take it without the need for a run-off (although he's not close to 50% in this poll).

Also, Foti is narrowly above Terrell (Mary Landrieu's opponent in the 2002 senate race) for AG.

It's nice to see Dems in a southern state with such a deep bench.

13. Yeah
But even if Jindal wins the first round it doesn't mean that he is guaranteed a win in the runoff. In fact, as the history above indicates, he could still win the battle but lose the war.

14. I was really glad when I heard that Foti was beating Terrell
It's good to have such a strong bench this year.
