LA: Breaux decision may set off political flurry

If you think the lights will dim on the political stage after this fall's election, you should check your program and get ready for the second act.

Next year, races for the U.S. senate seat held by Democrat John Breaux, and the seven congressional districts will take center stage in Louisiana.

Chris John, D-Crowley, U.S. representative for the 7th Congressional District, has said he may run for U.S. Senate if Breaux chooses not to run again. Breaux's term ends in January 2005, and he has said he will reveal after the governor's race if he will seek re-election next year.

U.S. Rep. David Vitter, R-Metairie, of the 1st District has said he would consider running for Senate if Breaux doesn't seek re-election.

Breaux is one of the consistent cross-overs to the Republican side.

I think that Rep. Chris John, our likely candidate, is more conservative than Breaux.

Do you think we can hold onto it in 2000? I know that Louisiana is generally more likely to send conservative Democrats to Washington, rather than Republicans, but what do you think?

Like the rest of Louisiana, it leans Repuke nationally but local conservative Dems can hold it.
