Pride PAC, a Michigan political action committee representing gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgender community, has endorsed Democrat Howard Dean for president.
Dean, Vermont's governor from 1991-2002, signed into law a 2000 civil unions bill providing marriage benefits to gay and lesbian couples. Civil unions give gay and lesbian couples legal rights, such as health benefits, inheritance, child custody and hospital visitation.
Civil unions performed in Vermont are not recognized in most other states, including Michigan. Efforts are underway here to add a constitutional amendment that would recognize as valid only marriage between a man and a woman.
Although the nine other Democrats running for president "are terrific on GLBT issues," Dean's efforts on behalf of civil unions make him the candidate best suited to win Pride PAC's endorsement, the group said in a statement released Monday.
