Robert Scheer: Let the General Lead Democrats' Charge

In my reckless youth I briefly sported an "I like Ike" button, which didn't go over particularly well in my corner of the Bronx, where support of even a moderate Republican represented a betrayal of everything decent.

In hindsight, though, I was right — the genial general-turned-president proved to be a warrior for peace and an important critic of what he saw as a "military-industrial complex" that threatened the very fabric of democracy: "We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

1. Pres. Ike was no warrior for peace
Under his Admin, the US deposed Iran's democracy and installed a tyrant, the Shah of Iran, and we and the Iranians are still suffering the consequences of that decision. Ike also sent the Marines into Guatamala to prevent the possiblity of United Fruit Co. losing some of its land to the peasants.

We don't need a general as president. They are more trouble than they are worth.

4. Time to enlighten Mr. Scheer
I'm pretty sure that a longtime lefty like him is unaware of Mr. Ikes transgressions. ;-)

3. First Moore and now Scheer...both republican schills... ..
I mean that's clearly the only reason either of these two astute minds with impeccable liberal credentials would say kind words about a man who the experts on a message board are convinced is a republican, right?

sarcasm....off

8. Didn't Moore support Nader in 2000
saying that there was no difference between Gore and Bush? Oh, but he wrote "Stupid White Men", so I guess he's forgiven :eyes:. At least he must have been looking in the mirror when he wrote that book.

What kind of drugs does Moore take?
