Washington, DC – The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) today became the sixteenth international labor union to endorse Dick Gephardt's campaign for the presidency. The 120,000 member union has 2,000 members in Iowa.
"The BCTGM takes great pride in endorsing Dick Gephardt for President," said BCTGM President Frank Hurt. "He has earned this endorsement through a lifetime of public service to working families. Dick Gephardt is a man of great integrity and he shares the values and principles upon which our union has been built. Dick Gephardt offers a solid plan for putting people back to work, keeping jobs in this country and ensuring that all Americans have adequate health care coverage. The BCTGM International Union will work closely with our local unions and members in primary and caucus states in an aggressive program of support for Dick Gephardt for the Democratic nomination." "The fight for working families is in my bones," said Gephardt. "I'm honored to have the support of the Bakers' Union. Together, we're going to run a winning campaign outlining bold, new ideas to lift this lagging economy for middle class families, create jobs and provide quality health insurance to every American that can never be taken away."
The BCTGM represents more than 120,000 working men and women in the United States and Canada. The primary goal of the BCTGM has not changed over the years: to bring economic justice in the workplace to all workers in our jurisdiction and social justice to all workers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
