Get yer Dennis Kucinich Phoenix pre & post debate party skinny here!
Desertrose...reporting live from...well I'm home now, but I was there live yesterday and I wanted to share this with my DU friends!

Too bad all you Dennis supporters couldn't have been there last nite...of course CNN didn't cover all the fun outside the Orpheum...but I was there...so here's the"skinny"....

We DK shirted supporters, all properly buttoned & signed, were hanging out in the Wyndham Hotel, waiting to accompany Dennis to the Orpheum - about 2 blocks away, to get ready for the debates. We were in a small group laughing and looking forward to seeing Dennis & I suddenly heard this booming southern accented voice say "Hi y'all. How ya doing? "

Looked over & there was John Edwards, smiling and waving to us. (Its funny - you get used to seeing these guys on TV and suddenly there he was about 10 feet away- live and in person!) I said "Hi John. We're great. How you doing? Good luck tonite!" and then he was gone to the elevators. He had one man with him and no one else around. (He seems very personable in "real life".)

Shortly after John went through we saw the Dean shirted supporters come down waiting either for Howard to appear there or to also go down to the Orpheum. One suited man comes through and says when Howard comes through you will all move out of the way for us won't you? I made an attempt at humor saying "no, we'll lay down and make you step over us." Ooops, bad timing I guess, don't think he appreciated my joke so I immediately said "Of course we'll move. This is all about working together and cooperating. We'll make way for you and if Dennis comes you can give us space." One of the DK supporters took pictures of some of the Dean supporters when they asked her to. It was really very mellow.

We got the word that Dennis was getting a ride down the the Orpheum ( it was pretty darn warm to walk it all dressed for the debate) so we all went down and joined the larger DK group. Man...they were already hyped!!! I think we definitely "won" for the most creative signs and the most vocal group! CNN, FOX & local stations were shooting a lot of footage (I know cause I managed to make my way right up to the police tape ...being short I wanted to see over all the signs, banners & posters! They definitely filmed all our signs.) We chanted and sang "Give peace a chance".

I kept noticing this tall goofy guy- dressed like a clown who was just being really silly and was out in front talking with the police & newsmen and realized it was Patch Adams!! He was there to support Dennis!!!!

Finally Dennis was there and we went wild!! He seemed genuinely surprised and pleased to see us all there. We greeted him with "Happy Birthday!!!" as he came around and spoke a few minutes and shook hands and we cheered and chanted and well, I said that already, didn't I? He actually spent quite a bit of time with his supporters before he had to go in for makeup. It was just this great high energy, positive even if rather spirited!

Everything seemed mellow- they had the street closed in front of the Orpheum and I only noticed about 4- maybe half a dozen cops (although there may have been more)... they were low key and I think just possibly, enjoying the show in the street.

We hung out as a group for quite awhile.. saw Kerry come across the street - he had supporters too- hard to tell how many and then Dean came in his limo. His supporters were cheering him and we saw a banner appear from one of the office buildings. It didn't seem to me he spent much time with them but from my position across the street and the Kerry & Dean people mixed together- it was tough to tell...plus by this time they wanted them everyone for makeup & so forth.

At this point I had to go back to the Wyndham to see how the party arrangements were coming since I had arranged for the band to play...now if you like great rock- you simply HAVE to hear these guys play. They are awesome!!! "2 SUNS". The band was pretty well set up and they cut loose for about 30 minutes before the debates started on our giant screen TV in the Sand Painter Room at the hotel. The room was filled with Green party, peace party and other folks tabling...we had a silent auctions and birthday gifts....this was a serious kick ass party, folks!

We all watched the debate and were pretty disgusted at CNN's crappy coverage and the miniscule amount of time given to Dennis. (I think had it not been for the fact we knew Dennis was coming later, the crowd would have mutinied and gone down & stormed the gates... seriously... they so blatantly ignored Dennis I wanted to...well.... nevermind)

OK...debate over...giant TV off...

"2 SUNS" starts to seriously rock and I mean seriously...with their own material...even played a new one...quality rock and roll with a positive message....(I think Dennis' theme song should be "New Reality"!) We even had a Dean supporter come down & say "Dean has disco!" He liked our music so much he kicked in a few bucks for the band! Dancing and groovin' baby...waitin' for DK...and as someone shouts "he's here!" - the band switches into "Imagine" with Gina's haunting vocals as Dennis walks in he is just blown away by the amount of people in the room so happy to see him. I got to shake his hand and even slip him a wee birthday gift ashe made his way through the crowd! Patch Adams and Mimi Kennedy introduced him and he spoke in his inspiring way to us, took some questions and after was given a surprise birthday cake-all vegan!!

Unfortunately he had to catch a flight out to the NAACP debates on the east coast so we didn't have as much time as we'd hoped with him ( How does he do it I wonder!)

We did manage to get Gina & Gary -2 SUNS - an opportunity to give Dennis a CD and he was so sweet- he shook Gina's hand, held it actually and made her tell him all the songs on the CD and thanked them both for the great music and asked Gary to make sure to have contact info....and Desertrose even managed to say hello to Dennis again. :)

It was a great great evening and experience...in spite of CNN & the media's exclusion of Dennis....but you know what? What I saw and have been feeling from his supporters....this is a very deep thing and I am sure, at some point , sooner rather than later...they will be unable to ignore Dennis as the amount of grassroots and groundswell support will no longer be able to be denied....

....and for all the Dean & Kerry people I saw, who came to Dennis' party...welcome!!

The hotel valets told us we partied longer and better than any of the others.....

So a big wahoo for Dennis and another big wahoo to the AZ DK TEAM! Sherry, Robert, Kevin and my thanks to 2 SUNS!!
:grouphug:

Peace
DR

PS Anyone intersted in the 2 SUN's CD- pm me :)

3. I'm like on the verge of supporting Kucinich
I'm now a Dean supporter, but I just might go for Kucinich...although it is sad that the bitch woodruff never gave him enough time, when he was asked the question about the hate around the world, I really liked his response. I also like Mosley Braun...

Frankly, I hear all these rich liberals who are going to spend like 400 million dollars next year. However, you can't just throw money at the problem, especially the state the Democratic Party is in. The Democratic Party needs to be fixed.

We need to do some seroius soul searching. Kucinich and Mosley Braun realize this...Dean has some understanding of it...but he doesn't understand all of it. The Party needs to be fixed...and only then will the party will be ready to compete in the election.

and got some Marley fans in our camp too. He talks often about America's days when we were respected and how we need to go back to that.

4. Fantastic, DR!
:hi:

I'm so glad to hear this report. I missed the debate; I didn't get home from work until it was over.

I read the transcript, and figured I didn't miss that much after all; Dennis hardly got to say anything.

In spite of all, Dennis is still generating enthusiasm and a deep level of support...and the campaign continues to grow.

Here's to a more peaceful, just future for America!

it was a great release after the debate...it was so discouraging to see the way they treat Dennis-all the candidates, but he gets the shabbiest treatment from the media, thats for sure!

Had I been home alone watching the debates my TV would probably had a heavy object thrown at it....guesss I posted to share a bit of positive energy,eh?
:loveya:

and the CD...just real good rock- high energy- here's their press release:

The band 2 Suns from Sedona, Arizona, is happy to be playing for and supporting Dennis Kucinich during the Democratic debates in Phoenix on October 9th, 2003. 2 Suns is an uplifting, high energy group with many positive lessons in their lyrics that are complimentary to Dennis' platform.

The 2 Suns style is contemporary rock with "classic" overtones. The lineup is Gina Dinello on vocals, Gary Bettum on guitar ,Troy Perkins on bass and Ron James on drums.

2 Suns feels honored and grateful to be a part of this campaign-Go Kucinich!

Gina sounds a bit like an early Grace Slick and was the voice coach for Michelle Branch!

6. well, I've been kinda busy....
Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 10:27 AM by Desertrose
working on the DK campaign here and also working with the AZDK state group...getting some graphics done, going to meetings and working a bit with the fundraising end of things...

....then suddenly my own biz got busy again and I had some major wholesale accounts that wanted orders like...yesterday! I even had a big order for a Japanese account- that was an interesting meeting as they spoke little English and I know about two words of Japanese...but we managed & somewhere in Japan, there are now my purses for sale !!

I was just so jazzed and wanted everyone here on DU to know that in spite of ZERO media reporting on DK...there is a very large (and growing daily) group of those who support Dennis!!!! ...and the man is really for real...really!

Hopefully I'll be able to post a bit more often...how're things with you these days, blm???

Peace and music!!!!

Almost took my camera but it hasn't been working and I knew I'd be pretty busy....it was a wild and happy bunch!!

"I was just so jazzed and wanted everyone here on DU to know that in spite of ZERO media reporting on DK...there is a very large (and growing daily) group of those who support Dennis!!!! ...and the man is really for real...really!"

See my post titled "Kucitizens at Wellstone Memorial Bean Feed." Eight of the fifty people who showed up on this miserably rainy and windy day to eat outdoors were DK volunteers!

Anyway thanks again for your great description of the event...it's the kind of thing that keeps me fired up, Dennis is the first canidate I can remember to make me feel this way. Our future can be great with his vision and leadership. Peace

16. Excellent Report! Can't wait to see him THIS TUESDAY!
I was at an event at the University of Minnesota campus in Mpls during the debate, and represented Dennis in a post-debate Q&A session sponsored by the U Democrats. We had over 200 students there, and a lot of supporters, too-- as many as Clark and Dean, I'd say! :)

I agree, CNN's coverage was scandalous, especially considering Kucinich got five whole minutes :eyes:

He's coming here to Minneapolis on Tuesday as part of his announcement tour. Our whole DKMN staff is very busy organizing. If things work out, I may even get to play my DK song before he speaks (good karma is welcome from all!).

Very good report DR! Glad to hear from you! :grouphug:

20. Oh wow....I forgot this part.....
.....after Dennis spoke with Gina & Gary ( the band)...his campaign assistant (who was really kind & did a great job of getting Dennis the opportunity to speak to key folks) whispered in his ear and Dennis went walking over to this dear little couple who had been the ones who prepared his vegan meals while he was here.

He made a special point of thanking them and telling her how they were the ones who got him through the CNN debate by preparing his "delicious and nourishing" meals! (She kept saying I was afraid you wouldn't like it and he said he No - they were fantastic and he really really enjoyed them! Now is that cool or what? ...plus he stood between them and someone snapped off a few photos....All this was after the meet & greet & he had to catch a flight!

In the midst of this the 5 year old grandaughter of the PHX coordinator was dancing & twirling around Dennis and he kept giving her hugs...it was really cute. He was genuinely enjoying her energy and antics....

These are the things that the media would never see.... let alone report....its also why I put them on DU....so others can see this man is a real human being...not out for show or ego...and he is the one for chnaging things . I know he can do it...we have to give him the opportunity....

Peace, music & hope
DR

I like to find out what the candidate is really about and small things can be very telling.

I find DK to be a true heart centered person who also has political know how....a rare commodidity in those who hold office these days!!!

25. It's wonderful to hear reports from people who see DK in person.

DR, I think you were the first DUer to post about meeting DK, certainly one of the first. I remember you writing about a woman presenting DK with an American flag from a veteran's casket (Was the veteran her father? Her husband? I'm not sure now.) He was very touched to receive it and talked about what the flag meant to him, with his words making it clear why he voted for the amendment banning flag desecration. It was pretty much what I'd have expected him to say but I was glad to read it here, written by a supporter, not a reporter. ;-)

Thanks for all your posts and your work for DK!

26. Dennis' first visit to Phx in June....
and it was her father..when she gave him the flag, she said Dennis reminded her of her father in how he stood up for the underdog and how he took a stand on principles.....

I am happy to share...it is so energizing to be a part of this campaign....
besides...I dont think reporters report about DK....yet!!

:grouphug:
we have to stick together, right??
