Great Kucinich (or rather anti-Bush) rally in Riverside, cA

The Kucinich people were out in full force at the anti-Bush protest in Riverside. All but about a half dozen people were Kuicnich supporters and Kucinich signs were everywhere. The Kucinich people and the Coalition for Peace and Justice people (who were also wearing Kucinich buttons) tabled the event.

One of the Kucinich people asked the news crews to count Kucinich signs and pointed out that hundreds of his supporters had turned out to protest the thief. One newsman located one of the few Dean signs and spent a lot of time photographing it. Somehow this seemed like slanted news coverage. The low turnout of Dean people may have had something to do with his statement in the last debate that he would support giving Bush the $87 million dollars. A lot of people present expressed a lot of disappoinment in the Dean campaign.

The Kucinich people are certainly active everywhere.

2. I brought this up out of respect for the former Dean people who

were present tonight. A number of people came up to me and said that they had decided to switch from Dean and they wished more people would look at where Dean stands on the issues.

It is also about the fact that the newspapers are going out of their way to cover candidates other than Dennis. When he has a large rally of people at an event they should show it rather than searching out supporters of anyone else to focus on.

5. You're so right

When Dennis came to Minneapolis, we got coverage from the Star-Tribune by nagging them till they begged for mercy, but when I went home to watch the local commercial news programs, I found that only one station bothered to even mention the rally. This is in spite of the fact that this rally drew at least 75% and perhaps 150% more people than the August rally (depending on whose crowd estimates you believe) on a night when there was a competing event of interest to progressives (the release of a book about Paul and Sheila Wellstone, with Al Franken as guest speaker).

Reading the papers, I find a consistent pattern of articles giving extensive column inches to Gephardt, Lieberman, Kerry, Dean, and to a lesser extent, Clark, and if they mention Dennis Kucinich at all, it's in a sentence or two at the end. If they had footnotes in newspaper articles, the mentions of Dennis would be footnotes.

But even so, the Kucinich supporters have a lot of heart. We were at the Minnesota State Fair, leafletting arriving fairgoers, and at the DFL booth, we were the second largest contingent of volunteers after the Dean supporters. At the recent Wellstone Memorial Bean Feed, we were by far the largest contingent of volunteers to come out on a rainy, blustery day. And although I did very little in preparation for Tuesday's rally (my job was to contact ethnic radio announcers), I know that we accomplished a lot with little money and a lot of persuading people to donate their services.

The "Kucinich for president" movement feels as if it's growing, not shrinking.

9. The media has Kucinich on "Ignore"

I agree wholeheartedly Lydia. There's a very good article about how the media doesn't want to take Kucinich seriously in the latest issue of The Nation (www.nation.com).

At times, it seems like Dennis is the only one to actually TALK about the issues, and how we can fix them-- not with incremental changes, but by coming up with new and better solutions. It's extremely frustrating to have the scope of the debate narrowed because "the press" doesn't take our candidate "seriously". :eyes:

And I agree about the MN rally. I was seated with the musicians to the right of the stage (I played guitar and sang the song in Spanish, btw) and there were AT LEAST 1200 there on Tuesday. The floor was SRO (900 seated, at least 100 standing) and the balcony was full.

Kucinich HAS the support, when will the media start REALIZING it?

I understand that a picture of the march was also submitted but it reportedly looked too much like a Kucinich march.
