The Demographics Of Clarkism
The Demographics Of Clarkism

"In the latest Gallup poll, Wesley Clark once again is the top choice of Democratic-registered voters around the nation. Clark garners 22 percent support, compared to Dean at 15 percent, Kerry and Lieberman at 12 percent, and Gephardt at 10 percent.

---------snip--------

In terms of ideology, Dean beats Clark among liberals, 24 percent to 18 percent, but Clark wins moderates by 24 percent to 11 percent and conservatives by 23 percent to 7 percent. The general picture, then, is that Clark does especially well, relative to Dean, among the very groups where Democrats have been having the most problems. That suggests to Public Opinion Watch that the emerging Clark candidacy deserves very serious consideration indeed."

It sure bears repeating.

2. I wonder what they mean by liberal
My house is one hundred per cent liberal - We've got an FDR liberal, a couple of JFK liberals, an SDS liberal and younger folks who are quite liberal and we're 100% for Clark. Most of the people at the meet-up I go to are pretty liberal, too. What they're not is nearly as upscale as the people at the nearest Dean meet-up. In these parts that's the difference in the demographic.

3. With respect to the pollsters
The group that Democrats have the most problems with are not the centrist few but the disenfranchised many that don't intend to vote for anyone. In the context of a continuing war, however, both will find an honest voice calling to keep their sons and daughters from being killed in an ongoing occupation of Iraq (and who knows where else by then). In my opinion, *General* Clark needs to develop --and should already have developed-- a plan to GET US OUT. Being a better auctioneer at the Iraqi Assets Fire Sale should not, in my opinion, be the role of any Democratic presidential candidate.
