Top CA Democrat: Voted For Schwarzenegger

BERKELEY, Calif., Oct. 18 — The California recall election is over, but the political fallout among Democrats is not.

That became clear on Saturday when one of the state's top Democrats, Attorney General Bill Lockyer, told a conference here that he not only understood why so many Californians had voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican governor-elect, but also that he had voted for Mr. Schwarzenegger.

Mr. Lockyer, a liberal Democrat who had served 25 years in the State Legislature and had helped lead George S. McGovern's presidential campaign in 1972 in California, said it was the first time he had voted for a Republican in a partisan election.

"I am tired of transactional, cynical, deal-making politics," Mr. Lockyer said. "I want to see principled leadership. And yes, he may be naïve about that. But you know what? It is real."

This sickens me but I also see it as one of our problems as a party. We honestly keep buying into the opposition's rhetoric. We let them control the image, style, and substance and only react to it. Why haven't we taken a principled stand against the Confederate Flag? It would cost us votes in the short run but we would win in the long run. Why aren't we picking the issues that get debated? Yes, getting the ear of the media is part of the problem, but that can be changed too. Turn off Fox. Turn off Right Wing radio. Demand local stations carry alternative progressive voices. Don't threaten boycotts, just turn off the station.

and is undoubtedly positioning himself for the run for governor. At least he didn't come out against Davis during the campaign. He has despised Davis for years (as have I).

Lockyer's loyalty isn't to the Democratic party. In fact, does anyone have loyalty to the Democratic party?

He's proven himself to be quite smart, and he has a self-deprecating sense of humor, too, which is a plus.

Knock him for his policies all you like, but don't kid yourself about his intelligence.

The public does not like the idea of "bought and paid for" career politicians who pander to special interests that funnel money into their reelection campaigns. Arnold won CA because he was seen as an outsider and more importantly somebody who would not conduct business as usual in Sacramento by trading policy for cash. It used to be a rallying cry for dems... but not so any more. Let's face it... we are as deep into this "business as usual" crap as the 'pukes are.

The only question is will we learn from this and start offering up public celebrity progressives to challenge incumbent repukes or will we just keep scratching our heads asking ourselves how this all came to be? I see the tides turning away from the corruption that we call US Politics and folks, need I remind you that that's a good thing?
