An open letter from Vince Whitacre
Dear Friends,

My name is Vince Whitacre, and I expect to be the next U.S. Representative from Wisconsin's Fifth District. I'm running for Congress because I still believe in the American Dream: in the spirit, the strength, and the principles that made our country great.

My opponent, Jim Sensenbrenner, has been in Washington since 1979. During that time, he has lost touch with his constituency, and his positions have grown more and more extreme. For example:

--He voted to strip up to 8 million American workers of our earned overtime pay.
--He voted to CUT veterans' benefits by $9.7 BILLION.
--He voted to give huge tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% of Americans, while the rest of us are spending more and more each year for health care.
--He voted to send $87 billion to Iraq, while American schools crumble.
--He voted to give billions of dollars to Halliburton and Bechtel for the rebuilding of Iraq, while our troops stationed there have to pay their own way if they want to visit their families while on leave.

When I am elected, I will stand up for what is right. This means that I will never give handouts to multi-millionaires at the expense of Americans who have to work for a living. I will never sell out our small business owners and family farmers for the sole benefit of multinational corporations that send American jobs overseas. I will fight for the students in our schools. I will preserve our freedom. I will always work to ensure that the Veterans' Administration is adequately funded, and that our troops in the field are provided for.

It's an unfortunate fact that our elections have become dominated by money. Jim Sensenbrenner has a huge campaign war chest, two-thirds of which is money from special-interest groups that do not have the best interests of the American people at heart. He also has a personal fortune of several million dollars. In order for us to prevail in this struggle, in order for us to make this great country OURS again, we need to raise the money that will enable us to compete. That is why I have made it my goal to raise $100,000 by January 1, 2004. We need to serve notice to the likes of Ken Lay, John Tyson, and Jim Sensenbrenner that our democracy is NOT for sale.

I am asking you, friends, to visit my website, http://www.vince4congress.com. Take a look around, and learn more about where I stand on the issues that affect us all, everyday. I'm also asking you to help reclaim the American Dream by contributing to my campaign at http://www.vince4congress.com/contribute. Any amount you can give, whether $2,000 or $50, will go toward one goal alone: making the United States Congress an institution we can be proud of.

Jim Sensenbrenner has proven that he will not stand up for Americans who have to work for a living, whether they work in our factories, or wear the uniform of the United States in combat. I will. I promise you that ALL Americans -- whether rich, middle class, or poor -- will be equal before my eyes, and I will treat them as they deserve to be treated: as citizens of the greatest country in the world, the United States of America.

Thank you,
Vince

P.S. -- Please forward this message to everyone you know who loves America and wants to make her strong again.
