From the blog today:Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa has billboards professing it is what is college is supposed to be. Judging from the beautiful campus and the good turnout of students, it must be true.
The fellow who sat closest to me at a rally had a Democratic Underground T-shirt on, but when I asked him his screen name (I sometimes check out their forum), he demurred (as I used to say when I practiced law) and it probably was unfair to ask him to say it aloud in a crowded room.
Next stop, the child care center at the VA hospital in Knoxville. Pam Mahoney leads a staff with an unbelievably low turnover rate, which is great for the children. What is not great for the children -- or the community -- is that the VA is slated to close the center and the hospital and even to demolish the support buildings when the hospital is reduced to an outpatient clinic. Not only is this a failure to keep our commitment to veterans and evidence of a lack of vision about how to use our existing resources, it is also a huge blow to a working community, the kind of community this President seems to have forgotten except in election season.
Now the long drive to Iowa City. I'll check in later.
