Listen, I'm easy to impress. All you have to do is stay on message and be direct. Most Americans are a lot more particular than I am. So if I have a problem with the shifting statements of Howard Dean, how do you think he's going to fare in a general election? How much do you think the repugs will like dissecting every conflicting statement he has made throughout the whole campaign, so they can throw his words back in his face? Even Tim Russert took him down a notch or two, do you think that's going to get better?

I simply stated a fact: Most of his career Kucinich's Catholicism informed his once irresolute opposition to a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy.

Now that Dennis has had a few divorces, he seems to have softened on his willingness to insert his (Catholic) religion into public life. That's fine with me. I'm not about to endorse him for nomination, but his recent change will make it easier to hold my nose and vote for him if by some incredible fluke, he becomes the nominee.

While I don't know you personally, and this thus may not apply to you, I note that many of the Kucinich folks - some of whom are obviously former Nader folks - identify themselves as "progressives" and use this self description to righteously track down every obscure vote or stance they don't like by any of the (in their view) less "progressive" candidates. Sometimes this nonsense is accompanied with a "my way or the highway" threat to vote Green. Thus, this turnabout on a serious issue, women's right, is thus perfectly fair play in my opinion.

Religious pandering, whether by my candidate or someone else's candidate, makes me uncomfortable. It's very clear though, that neither Dennis nor Howard nor Wes nor Carol, nor John nor John... would function at quite the same level of Ayatollahism as the current occupant of the White House and his disciples. For this reason both they, and all the other Democratic Candidates (if you don't count Lieberman as a Democrat) would be infinitely superior to Bush. Hell, I'll go wild here and say that even Holy Joe would be preferable.

One thing is sure; I will support the nominee whether he's my man Dean or someone else, even if he's your guy.

especially his concern for the poor and disenfranchised. Many Catholics were raised with strong liberal values and shouldn't be so quickly dismissed. There were thousands of nuns and priests behind the grape boycotts and the antiwar protests. The values of Catholicism are a great springboard for liberal politics.

Yes, there has been a surge to the right, and sometimes they don't mix well at all, but, there are still many who cling to the valuable lessons of the Kucinich, Kerry, Kennedy type of Catholicism.
