California Field Poll: Boxer has a 45/40 Re-elect
A new Field poll (acutally released last Friday) indicates that Dem Senator Barbara Boxer could have a tough race in 2004.

Currently 45% of respondents say they are inclined to re-elect her while 40% say they are not.

There is a gender gap as men are split while women give Boxer a decided edge (46/36)

However, against possible 2004 GOP opponents Boxer is currently leading:

Boxer: 48%
Sec of State Jones: 34%

Boxer 50%
Strickland 28%

Boxer: 50%
Marin 27%

Boxer 49%
Casey 26%

1. She's going to win
She is just more experienced and her opponent will just run on an anti-Boxer/Davis campaign.

5. Wish it were that easy.
Polls placing her on the fence are a preface to the Rethugs handing her seat to some RW poser.

6. yep, first you use PR to make the race seem "close"
then, when your super-neato Diebold machines "count" the repube as the winner, nobody is surprised

we'll be seeing this a LOT

There are legitimate reasons, but screaming fraud every time an election doesn't go the way you want it to takes your credibility away.

7. She doesn't deserve to win
Not after her comments yesterday about how people speaking out against the Patriot Act didn't know what they were talking about.

She is probably besides Senator Feingold, the most liberal senator we have. She is a HERO for the left. I may not agree with her on everything but if you want a senator to agree with you on everything you will have to run yourself. I remember when people were Bashing Feingold for voting on Ashcroft, and Wellstone for voting yes on DOMA and breaking his pledge to only serve two terms. No one is perfect. Boxer, Feingold, and the former Senator Wellstone are some of the best senators we have ever had, in my opinion.

10. She's far from the most liberal senator but she's good.
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 01:10 PM by genius
Kennedy is the most liberal Senator. He has only one bad vote in his career (USA PATRIOT) and he wants to repeal that. A number of Senators voted against Homeland Security. Byrd's suddenly turned into a liberal. I think she needs an education on this issue. Incidentally, overall her voting record is better than Feingold's. He supported Yucca and the $87 billion.

15. Who is more liberal?
You mention Ted Kennedy but who else. She is generally considered to be the most liberal of any senator. According to the ratings, which aren't great, she usually has a completely liberal voting record. I don't know who is else is farther to the left than her.

9. Boxer is California's best Senator
She is the one who has opposed the right-wing extremists. We've had to pull teeth to get Feinstein to oppose any right-wing extremists. With two exceptions (USA-PATRIOT and Homeland Security), Boxer's voting record has been great. She opposed the war and the $87 billion. Feinstein has basically backed Bush's economic plan while Boxer has opposed it. Boxer will have the popular support here. Feinstein, wisely, has decided not to run for re-election.

14. I would totally give up
Haven't we heard rumors about Dennis Miller running against her? If
he gets in and wins, that would be it for me. We had a taste of
Robert Duvall saying he's embarrassed by actor's statements on
politics but then said how he loves Dennis Miller. Hmmm...just the
beginning of the drum beat for Miller - who knows. I agree with
everyone who thinks Boxer is one of the best, she is and if
the Senate race in Democratic California appears close, we may be in
trouble as she should be a shoe in California.

21. She won by 800,000 votes in 1998
Unless she finds herself in a major scandal she will win. She will have to work for it but she will come up ahead.

28. Boxer has always won by a smaller margin
than Feinstien -- HOWEVER, it's a new day. You can't possibly understand how pissed off the base is here, at everything. At the recall and the White House's manipulation of the whole debacle, at our pansy-assed DNC-backed "representatives," at the Iraqi invasion and occupation that came WITH THE HELP of WAY too many Democrats (NOT Boxer), just to name a few. It's always been an uphill battle for Boxer as she's perceived to be a "librul" and she truly is, but the base is FIRMLY behind her and you HAVE to have the base in order to win. The only question will be what the Green party will do. I REALLY REALLY hope they don't run a candidate against her -- they don't get much more liberal than Boxer so I see no reason for the Greens to run anyone.

Feinstein, however, WILL be in deep shit. She's abandoned the base and the base has and will abandon her. The Greens will DEFINITELY run a candidate against her and they should. She doesn't represent anything but large corporations and the DNC. We need Feinstein OUT and a REAL Democrat in.

29. The Greens will run someone against Boxer
Mark my words they will. Boxer has to operate under the assumption that they will run someone against her.

Feinstein won by 2,000,000 votes in 2006. She could survive a Green attack against her.

22. she'll win
Bill Jones is probably the strongest GOP candidate considering the race, but remember that he came in third place in the gubernatorial primary (losing to Bill Simon). The reason why her 1998 race was so close was that her opponent was Matt Fong, an Asian-American and moderate. Currently, I don't think you can win statewide in California as a republican unless you are to the left of Pete Wilson.

Boxer will win. She is kind of like the liberal version of Jesse Helms. He always had tough races, but managed to come out ahead. I think she wins probably somewhere around 52-48 to 56-44.
