WASHINGTON - When Vice President Dick Cheney appears with Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell at a fundraiser in Denver next month, their remarks will leave no doubt that the senator is a candidate for re-election, his campaign staff says.
"He is absolutely running," said campaign spokeswoman Cinamon Watson. "He is raising money. We will have office space by mid-December. ... We have county chairs in 64 counties with volunteer cards - and bumper stickers."
Campbell, a Republican from Ignacio, is expected to make his official statewide kickoff tour early next year, Watson said. In the meantime, Cheney's visit to Colorado, and the speeches at the event, will be used to try to quell lingering doubts about his intentions.
The 70-year-old senator has insisted for months that he is running for a third term, but political aficionados here and in Colorado have been trafficking in rumors that Campbell will not make the 2004 race because of a lack of interest, a desire to return to Colorado, or his ongoing battle with prostate cancer.
