As I've told too many people here :D at DU, I first got into party politics because of Paul Wellstone. I was in college in 1987 (not at Carleton where Paul taught, though) when Paul first came to our campus. He came there as a friend of one of my professors, who was running for state legislature against a man who can best be described as John Ashcroft with a beard. It was a fairly conservative, rural district, but we won by just a handful of votes in 1988.

At that time, Paul was also leading Jesse Jackson's 1988 run in Minnesota. Although I was supporting Dukakis then, I still kept track of Paul, and went to hear him speak on many occassions. When he decided to run for Senate in 1990, I (and many other members of my campus Democrats club) got behind him 100%: doorknocking, campaigning, and most importantly going to the precinct caucuses that cold February evening.

Needless to say, we overwhelmed Paul's primary opponent, who was the choice of the Modales and Humphreys. We outnumbered them at the precincts, and onward at the county, and onward at the Congressional District, all the way to the State convention. I had the honor to represent Paul as a Delegate to the DFL State convention in 1990, and was there on the floor when he made his acceptance speech. It was tremendous-- green was everywhere, everybody was clapping, yelling, crying, you name it.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

About a year ago, I was sitting at work when a coworker told me that Wellstone's plane had crashed and all aboard were killed. I was devastated. Although I'd not been active in national-level politics since the 90s (mostly did local stuff), it hit me hard. I literally broke down. I took the afternoon off and went home-- I was too shocked to do anything else.

I decided that, after the 2002 debacle, I wanted to get involved with the Dems again. I came back to the party, although with major trepidation (Gore was about as "inspiring" as he was in 1988). I never really liked Clinton, and wasn't especially impressed with the other contenders. Then I found Bob Harris's webpage comparing Dean (who reminds me of Dukakis, btw) and Kucinich. I didn't need much convincing to see that Dennis is fighting for the same things Paul fought for, and isn't afraid to take it to the street, just like Paul did for the farmers in the early 80s.

It's great to finally have a candidate who is worth voting for (I voted Nader in 1996 and 2000 (mainly so the Greens could get campaign matching funds in MN). Dennis CAN win this. He is PROVEN. He is ELECTABLE. He can LEAD. He is RIGHT on the issues.

What more needs to be said?

I was no Clinton fan either, so mostly tried to ignore national politics during his terms. After Bush was selected, I got back into the fray.

I originally supported Dean, actually, based on his comments against the war (ho ho!), but when he said the pentagon budget was a sacred cow, that was it for me, and that was when I found out about Kucinich. :)

Like you, I admired Wellstone greatly. I was home on the afternoon his plane crashed (luckily not at work I couldn't have explained it to my boss!) and when I found out I was in the car. Someone told me and I was angered because they knew I had donated to his campaign (even though I'm in TX) and thought very highly of him. I thought they were teasing. When I realized it was the truth, I broke down. I remember my kids asking why I was crying, and I couldn't explain it to them... except to say that we'd lost a great man who fought hard for the people against the powerful. They're too young now but when they're older they'll hear the whole story.

Thanks for sharing your experiences campaigning for Wellstone. I'm glad you went through this 'no you can't, because we SAID so' routine before, because now that it's national, and now that the stakes are so much higher, we really need those kinds of testimonials!

Have you sent that to the campaign website, btw? It's a great story, and really illustrates Kucinich's belief in working hard to attain goals previously believed to be unattainable.

And to your question, I'll answer: nothing more needs to be said... we just need to tell more people! :)

I wrote the campaign and asked for the light bulbs. It would be pretty hypocritical if I didn't donate now that they put it up.

I wonder what his goal will be for next month. I'm guessing 1 million.

we can donate other things like time, energy and ideas as well as money. every man/woman do what you can to impliment the plan. talk to kids at school, strikers on the picket line fighting for healthcare, anyone anywhere, first there is one, now there is a pair. before long hope eclipses dispair. keep up the good work peoples

Just like you I've never donated to a campaign. Just wasn't motivated before. Now, though... WHOLE different story. :)

I'm lower middle class, and have cut back on little 'extras' so that I can donate. This next one will be my fifth donation, and like snoochie it's a bit from every check.

We need to spread the word so people know every little bit counts... a few bucks from a whole bunch of supporters adds up!

all the excitement in this campaign is in the Kucinich and Dean camps, and to a lesser extent, Clark.

Dean and Kucinich are showing that you can raise lots of money from ordinary voters, and in Kucinich's case, it's even more remarkable, since he gets zero publicity in the mainstream media.

The others are going to the usual corporate sources of money and ignoring the people who can actually vote.

Attending events, I have seen ONLY Kucinich, Dean, and Clark having more than one or two supporters handing out literature. If other candidates are represented, it's with one or two people who look like staffers.
