Statement from Rep. Major Owens on Dean's Leadership
Was in response to Sharpton, but ended up a nice long statement. Check out these excerpts:

To achieve our common ground goal of a Democrat in the White House, Howard Dean is the only candidate with a clear enough vision combined with toughness and independence. With respect to African American concerns, Dean starts with an evolving slate. The "doors of his church" are wide open to a broad spectrum of African American leadership. After his election, Howard Dean can be expected to bring into his circle of new national leadership more Black leaders than any of the other candidates. He has this flexibility because he doesn't owe the establishment any dues.

And no one should go forth with the mistaken assumption that the vital issue of war and peace is not important to the African American constituency. When the Congressional Black Caucus members overwhelmingly voted against the waste of 87 billion dollars in Iraq, they were expressing the will of the people in our neighborhoods who insist that our needs be met here at home first. Our people, our rank and file is already with Howard Dean. Black leaders must run to catch up."

2. Yep this is good news for Dean
...one piece at a time, he's breaking down the stereotypes about his campaign...can't raise money...can't get anyone's attention...can't rise above the "ultra liberal" tag...can't compete with Gep in Iowa or Kerry in NH...can't draw older people and minorities...This is how a campaign is built.

I had a response to a letter in Iowa, by the way! She said she is undecided, but wants to beat Bush, and asked for more on Dean.

3. After listening to him speak last night
There was no question in my mind that Dean is serious about racial discrimination and will fight against it at every turn.

He said whenever you see bigotry rear its ugly head it was your duty to speak out against it. This was in front of an almost entirely white crowd.

It is my firm belief that this man will bring social equality to a new high in america when he becomes president.

I have never seen a politician speak out so forcefully about race/gender/sexual persuasion issues. It is something very important to him and seems to be an underlying motivation in a lot of his stances.
