That was the background to Dr. Dean’s earliest political consciousness. The first tentative political memory anyone has of Howard Dean is that of his collection of Eisenhower buttons. Howard was in third grade in the fall of 1956, and he and his classmates collected buttons for the two rival Presidential candidates, Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. Boys filled the linings of their blazers with them. The "I Like Ike" buttons were, of course, the most popular at the Republican-leaning school. Eisenhower’s second and final Secretary of State, Christian Herter, was a Browning alumnus, and "he was constantly mentioned to us and held up as a role model," Mr. Miller said.

Young Howard was, of course, for Eisenhower. "People basically followed the politics of their parents," recalled Mr. Miller, now a classics professor at New York University.
I find this funny, but in light of the deanie who called Clark last night demanding him to JUSTIFY his vote for Raygun, it's a hoot!

8. The difference between Howard Dean and Wes Clark..

is that Dean has been an elected Democrat since the late 1980's and has a record to back up his Democratic credentials. Clark has no verifiable record as a Democrat, let alone as one who can demonstrate competence in a civilian political office.

Dean also worked on Jimmy Carter's re-election bid, became Democratic Town Chair, and worked his way up the civilian political ladder as a Democrat.

Because of his verifiable record as a Democratic leader, Howard Dean can attack Clark for voting for Reagan with a clean conscience.

9. What a crock

You should really take up cable news as you belong there. Clowning clowning of the highest order. For the record Clark also voted for Bush 1 which means he voted for either an equal number or more Republicans for President than he did Democrats. Nixon, Reagan twice, Bush 1 vs Clinton twice and Gore. I strongly suspect he also voted for Ford but haven't read anywhere that he has said one way or the other. To compare that to wearing an Ike button at age 9 is clowning of the highest order.

And my mother nearly always votes Democratic and my father nearly always votes Republican - my brother is very conservative, and I'm not sure my sister votes.

Dean supports the basic ideas of equal justice. I think most people will eventually come around on civil unions as well. But the rest of it, old time Republican. That's how far right we've come.

12. Actually, if you read the whole article, that is just a throwaway

line about the Eisenhower buttons. The article is about Deans early education and how he grew up. I didn't see it as in any way negative; his family was referred to as wealthy but not snotty, and closeknit. He seems to have been likeable, yet very private.

Now if you want to make this article a pissing contest between who voted for who when, fine. Been there, done that, got over it weeks ago. I urge you to do the same.

Otherwise, just like on this thread, you're gonna keep missing the beautiful forest (the overall story) cause you keep obsessing about a few scraggly trees. Read the damned article, not just the posted quip!
