McAllen, -- Texas - Mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez's mother sits in the living room of the family's comfortable south Texas home, looking through photo albums and offering coffee and fresh-baked blueberry muffins.

Oralia Gonzalez smiles at a picture of Matt when he was 4 years old and the family lived in Puerto Rico -- his hair as pale as the sand outside the family's beachfront home, his skin golden from the summer sun.

Now just two days before San Francisco voters choose between Gonzalez and Gavin Newsom as the city's next mayor, the boy who Oralia Gonzalez called her "niño de oro," her golden boy, remains an enigma -- and an anomaly -- to some.
