Dennis Kucinich was amazing today. (NYC LGBT event)
I was worried about attendance because of the snow, but the room was filled. We had to set up more chairs at the last minute, and many people had to stand. A lot of people were already Kucinich supporters, but many others were undecided, and of those I spoke to at least 10 people who were completely energized by the event and had decided that the best way to stand up for ourselves this election season is to stand up for Dennis.

I had to leave the event before the audience questions, as the event took place where I work and I had to go back on duty. I noticed as I was leaving a man who is the founder of a local LGBT veterans group was about to ask a question. I knew the man had entered the event unsure of whom to support. I asked him later what he’d asked. He said he wanted to know if Dennis would issue an executive order to integrate the military so that LGBT people could serve openly. He told me that Dennis was unhesitant and unequivocal in his answer. He said that he would abolish Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and issue an executive order that would clearly end the discrimination against LGBT people who wish to serve. The man then showed me a Dennis Kucinich sticker that he’d affixed to his jacket. He said, “This is a $350 leather jacket. I don’t put stickers on this jacket. I’m not playing around. Dennis Kucinich is our guy.”

Dennis talked about LGBT issues like same-sex marriage. He talked about the difference between advocating for universal health insurance and universal health care, and how to pay for it—more specifically how we’re already paying for it but we just don’t deliver it. He talked about the Department of Peace and how it would function to promote non-violent conflict resolution both in foreign and domestic policy. He talked about a progressive tax structure and issues of economic justice. He talked about courage. His every point was infused with not only optimism, but also a knowledge of the essential value of optimism that was infectious.

He listened to the panelists very seriously. They each had a few minutes to talk about their own concerns and then Dennis had a chance to respond. I’d expected the panelists to have more direct questions for Dennis. I’d expected them to quiz him, kind of looking to stump him. But instead they all just seemed to open up about all their hopes and values. You could tell that Dennis was completely engrossed.

One of the panelists fell off his chair during the event. It was interesting to watch everyone’s reaction. The person sitting closest to him was stunned. A couple people in the audience stood up, including me. Dennis was right there next to him in a flash. He reminded me of my best friend who always knows exactly how to behave in any unexpected situation. Dennis helped the panelist up. He was fine. It was just interesting because I knew as I was watching this moment how entirely unpretentious and natural he was--and a natural leader.

I introduced myself to Dennis as he was leaving the building. I shook his hand and told him my name and that I’m a volunteer for his campaign. He thanked me. I wanted to thank him for so much, for speaking out against the PATRIOT Act, for his bravery during times when I felt so alone, for offering an example against fear, for making sense! I blurted out, “I just love you. Thank you for your voice during these difficult times.” He was so generous in the way that he heard me and made sure I understood before he left that I was the one that he needed to thank.

I was shaking for about 15 minutes, feeling seriously high.

So anyway, my report is that it was a very successful and uplifting event. I feel affirmed in my commitment to the evolution of this campaign.

1. Glad you had a good time
Did he vote for the Patriot Act? Just curious--I know that there weren't many who did. And actually, if he did, that doesn't bother me that much because it can be forgiven considering the circumstances.

What bothers me is skanks like Di-Fi who STILL go around and brag that they voted for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. Why did not the others know..
I have said all along, I will probably not vote for any candidate who backed the Iraq war, the Patriot Act,etc.. My question Denise's staff and Dennis knew how awful the Patriot Act use.. The other canidtates staff's are probably larger than Kucinich's..I can find no excuses...

3. I am so jealous!
Good for you! How wonderful to listen to him and then to meet him. I am afraid that if I ever did I would do the exact same thing. The man stands for what I believe in my heart and for the kind of world I want my kids to live in, all of us. I would probably meet him with tears in my eyes and do the exact thing you did. Thanks for the report.

4. I hope you do get a chance...
...to see him in person. I am more convinced than ever that I'm doing the right thing by supporting this campaign.

I do think this event may have been especially moving for me because I knew personally so many people who were there, including panelists--and because it took place in our community's home. But it was pretty great.

5. Having a personal
involvement would probably put me over the edge. I find myself tearing up often when he speaks. It is really odd because I do not cry easily (I'm such a tough girl LOL!). I think it is because he is so hopeful and things are so dire. Anyway, I doubt there is much chance he will ever be in Kansas, no one ever comes here. I am proud, however, of the fact that I will be walking with the walk for peace and housing a couple of them when they are here. I hope it is not snowing. Good for you rbnyc, you helped make his forum possible.

6. Thank you, rbnyc.
:hi:

You helped to organize an event to bring Dennis to the people. And you report a response that I've heard so many times. I had the same response; as a matter of fact, your post brought tears to my eyes, as I remembered the way he can lift the people around him. And this time, he did it literally as well as figuratively. ;-)

I got to hear/meet him twice. The first time cemented my support. The second time, at a Peace Day House Party last September, I sat in the back and listened to all of the people responding to him. And I knew. At the end of the evening I approached a couple I'd met a few times before; they liked Dennis' platform the best, but were uncommitted. I said, "Well? Is there anyone else?" They looked at me with tears in their eyes and said, "No. He is the one."

Honestly. When the state of the world presses in, and I begin to get discouraged, I go listen to one of his recordings. On his site or other places. A daily dose of Dennis is always what the Dr. ordered!

8. Dennis Kucinich speaks to us and for us...
Reading these first hand accounts of REAL people's REAL reactions to Dennis Kucinich is great.

It is about honesty, integrity, REAL ACTION and great stances on the issues. Not the empty rhetoric and politicizing that we get from some frontrunners.

All people need to do is let themselves listen to Dennis Kucinich. His vision and ideals speak to so many of us.

GO DENNIS!

America is crying out for a president like Dennis Kucinich.
When people allow themselves to listen to him, he resonates.

13. I love this hide feature!
I am taking "pre-emptive strikes" against threads with major "piss-off potential" by hiding before I read! It's not foolproof, since some people get to the good threads too. But it sure cleans up the first page, without seeing 6 duplicate threads obsessing over the same issues with certain candidates.

14. Glad you got to see him!!!
I saw him on the announcement tour in October, and actually got to "share" the stage with him for a few brief seconds (I was part of the musical entertainment at the event)! He's one of two politicians I've listened to up close (the other being Paul Wellstone) who give me HOPE that we can change this world, and return a little sanity to it.

It really does lend creedence to that saying that "a supporter of (insert candidate's name) is really just a Kucinich supporter who hasn't heard Dennis speak yet!

Kucinich is always great to hear. I just wish we could give him a chance, he is electable, sigh we want someone to stand up for us and we got a guy, yet hes "unelectable". How things change but all will be good.

17. Thanks for sharing rbnyc
Thank goodness you and the other volunteers there are making inroads for DK to connect directly with the people. The media treats him so poorly, but whenever its him face to face with the public there's never any mistaking how people feel about his policies.

I watched him at the Florida convention and saw someone just walk up and hug him. If I ever get a chance to meet him, that's what I'm doing, too. :)

19. Dennis is OUTSTANDING!
rbnyc, Thanks for sharing your experience. I think Dennis affects all that way who get to hear/see him in person. I have heard him speak several times in NH and have shaken hands. I've purchased several copies of his book "A Prayer For America" to keep and give as gifts.

22. no problem man!:)
personally, i could give a rats behind less about who Al Gore endorses...because of his weak candidacy, we were stuck with George Bush

Dennis is rising, and he may not win...but he is going to shape the platform

23. The platform is what I like about Dennis
but what the peeps dont realize is that, I like him as a person too, he gives perspective you know, he talked one time about having to have the grim task of telling people their kids died in Nam. Win or lose, I will always be proud of who I supported. I still have his autograph :D.
