Dean Picks Up NYC Endorsements
Twenty-three City Council members, including Speaker Gifford Miller, endorsed Howard Dean for president on Monday.

Among the Democratic councilmembers throwing their support behind the former Vermont governor at a Masonic hall in Manhattan were Bill Perkins and Christine Quinn, both representing Manhattan, and Melinda Katz, representing Queens.

There are 47 Democrats on New York City's 51-member Council.

In accepting the endorsement, Dean said, "I can't imagine this president winning this state or certainly this city after reducing funds for schools, cutting fire and police -- the essential services we need -- and gutting mass transit funding."
