Gonzalez and Newsom supporters clash at City Hall


Two events, each supporting a different San Francisco mayoral candidate, crossed paths this afternoon in front of San Francisco City Hall, resulting in an amplified shouting match across Polk Street.

As Matt Gonzalez supporters arrived at Civic Center Plaza by the busload to hear their candidate speak, a group of African-American religious and community leaders supporting Gavin Newsom wrapped up what they called a voter pride march on the steps of City Hall.

Both groups came equipped with microphones, amplifiers and the conviction that their candidate should become the city's next mayor in what some polls show could be a very close election on Tuesday.

As Gonzalez stepped onto the stage that had been set up in the plaza, several hundred supporters strained to hear his words over the shouting from across the street.
