http://www.sfgop.org/SAN FRANCISCO GOP - Overlooked in the stories about the various support for the Mayoral candidates was the unheralded support the local Republican Party gave to Gavin Newsom and the effect it had on the race. While the party did not specifically endorse Newsom, it was active in encouraging its registrants to vote. At the request of individual members and segments of the business community, the Party mailed two comparison pieces with absentee ballot applications.
Overall, 18,942 Republicans applied for absentee ballots, and 12,765 (67.4%) voted prior to election day. In total, Republicans accounted for 17.5% of the absentee vote versus GOP registration of 12.5%. It is estimated that the Republican vote for Newsom over 85%. "We did our job to get out the vote. Our Republican turnout was actually 4 points higher in the run off than it was in November and that made a difference", said Mike Denunzio, Chair of the Party. . . "Given the current 11,600 vote margin of victory compared to the number of absentee ballots and high turnout by Republicans, it's obvious we made a difference", said Jim Fuller Vice Chairman for Communications for the Party.

Had the election been decided only by votes cast on Tuesday, Mr. Gonzalez would have won by 53 percent to 47 percent, according to an analysis by Mr. Binder, the pollster.

SCOTT MCLARTY, GREEN PARTY - Democrat Gavin Newsom beat Green Matt Gonzalez in the race for San Francisco mayor, 53% to 47%. Newsom, taking corporate contributions and with a paid professional campaign staff, spent about $31 for each vote he received. Gonzalez, no contributions, all-volunteer campaign, spent about $4 per vote. 54% of SF voters are registered Democrat and 3% are Green.
