SF mayoral wrap-up
from Undernews www.prorev.com/indexa.htm

NEW 'DEMOCRATIC' MAYOR OF SF GAVE MONEY TO BUSH AND RAN ON HIS SLATE IN 2000

http://www.indybay.org/news/2003/12/1662786_comment.php?theme=1

In 2000, San Francisco's new 'Democratic' mayor, Gavin Newsom, gave $500 to the Bush campaign and got an endorsement from the city's GOP.

GOP DELIGHTED WITH NEWSOM VICTORY

SAN FRANCISCO GOP - Overlooked in the stories about the various support for the Mayoral candidates was the unheralded support the local Republican Party gave to Gavin Newsom and the effect it had on the race. While the party did not specifically endorse Newsom, it was active in encouraging its registrants to vote. At the request of individual members and segments of the business community, the Party mailed two comparison pieces with absentee ballot applications.

Overall, 18,942 Republicans applied for absentee ballots, and 12,765 (67.4%) voted prior to election day. In total, Republicans accounted for 17.5% of the absentee vote versus GOP registration of 12.5%. It is estimated that the Republican vote for Newsom over 85%. "We did our job to get out the vote. Our Republican turnout was actually 4 points higher in the run off than it was in November and that made a difference", said Mike Denunzio, Chair of the Party. . . "Given the current 11,600 vote margin of victory compared to the number of absentee ballots and high turnout by Republicans, it's obvious we made a difference", said Jim Fuller Vice Chairman for Communications for the Party.

DEAN E. MURPHY, NY TIMES - Mr. Gonzalez actually attracted more voters to the polls on Tuesday than did Mr. Newsom, but could not overcome Mr. Newsom's lead in absentee ballots, which favored the Democrat by 65 percent to 35 percent. Had the election been decided only by votes cast on Tuesday, Mr. Gonzalez would have won by 53 percent to 47 percent, according to an analysis by Mr. Binder, the pollster.

GONZALEZ GETS 47% AGAINST CORPORATIZED DEMOCRAT IN CITY THAT IS 3% GREEN

SCOTT MCLARTY, GREEN PARTY - Democrat Gavin Newsom beat Green Matt Gonzalez in the race for San Francisco mayor, 53% to 47%. Newsom, taking corporate contributions and with a paid professional campaign staff, spent about $31 for each vote he received. Gonzalez, no contributions, all-volunteer campaign, spent about $4 per vote. 54% of SF voters are registered Democrat and 3% are Green.

1. Enter Gavin Newsom's name into this search engine of campaign donors
http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/index.asp

Punch in 2000, 2002 and 2004 election cycles.

You'll see no Bush, or any other Republican names listed as recipients there.

Oh, how it must hurt Greenies for their platform to have been rejected in San Francisco of all places.

5. You're ignoring everything that hurts
I know, it sucks, but the Democratic party is highly vulnerable and your refusal to acknowledge it will only hurt you more

2. I might have voted for Gonzalez had I been a resident of SF
SF is a very left wing city, but it isn't anti-Dem. Heck, Gray Davis got 80% of the city voting to keep him in office compared to about 44% statewide. I think the people of the city care more about issues than party labels and that is why the Green candidate came so near to winning. Maybe I'm nuts but I think I would have had a hard time voting for someone who gave $500 to elect George W. Bush president. I hope that Newsom will recognize the progressive nature of his city and the diversity of his city and govern accordingly.

3. WAIT!
I believe Gavin was unopposed for his district seat - so this "endorsement" is moot.

It's just a slimy smear. Typical of the crap that Gonzalez has done throughout his campaign.

Quite sad.

Did you know that Gonzalez supporters protested *CLINTON's* appearance? What's up with that? Not good enough for you? Not pure enough?

See this Salon piece for some non-indy media news on this election:
