(quick thought: are libraries considered a liberal or conservative idea? Just curious).
I was bringing up some a book and some videos to check out, and noticed that they had a copy of the New York Times Bestseller top 10 list from 8/24/2003.
Curious, I looked on the non-fiction list. There at number 4 was Ann Coulter's Treason, and at number 5 was Hillary Clinton's Living History.
I looked a little more closely at the number 4 item. Yep, there was that funny little symbol at the end of the summary (a dagger).
For those without a scorecard, (thank you DU), that dagger means that there were a significant number of bulk purchases. I didn't get the description exactly, since the copy was cut off above the explanation of any symbols.
As my turn came up, I noted this to the librarian. Since they know me from being there quite often, I was able to chat with her. I explained about the symbol.
She asked: "So who is making those purchases?" I told her that it was probably the groups who want to drive up the image that Coulter is selling massive amounts of books.
After the explaining, she looked at me and said (not absolutely a perfect quotation, my memory isn't that great): "That's interesting, since I was just reading something about how the pharmaceutical industry was buying up a bunch of her books." One can only wonder why.
Ah, the info is getting out there.
Oh, by the way. The book I was borrowing? "What Liberal Media?" by Eric Alterman.
