He began attacking Stewart. It was only AFTER that, and in response to it (pointing out the irony of Tucker Carlson telling a comedian that he wasn't asking tough enough quesitons of Kerry) that Jon began his "lecture".

21. No, it's not an aiff. The aiff file was about 10x the size.
My mp3 encoder just leaves the original file name in the header info, which is why it may say aiff in your mp3 player.

so you may want to wait and try downloading again later during off-peak hours.

As I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I'm also crunching an mpeg-4 version of it for folks who are having trouble with the quicktime codec.

52. Wonk Appreciation Post
Thank you very much for providing this videoclip.

It is shame that extremely important confrontations with the American media is shown for a half hour at a time when most people are still at work or in the car or something and then never aired again.

As Stewart actually had the opportunity to so succinctly take the news media to task and say, on national television, on one of their own spintastic shows, that they simply are theatre masquerading as news.

By providing this clip, you have given us the tremendous opportunity to have access to this fleeting bit of footage that exposes the media for what they are, as well as to be able to show it to our clueless friends and family who actually follow and believe that the mainstream news media provides national debate on important issues which concern Americans.

On top of it all, I also now have it in three formats, mp3, quicktime and windows media, so it covers all the bases. Hell, I can even load it on my ipod and pocket PC to show it to people on the street, at bars or wherever! It's fantastic! I can't wait until the next time I'm at my local pub and somebody tries to make their point by stating, "I heard Tucker Carlson say...", and whip out this clip. It will be sweet.

Just for taking your personal time to capture and post this video I offer my sincere and utmost thanks.

Jon Stewart doesn't have to go a show and stand up to those guys eye to eye. He did that out of personal conviction and love of country. Awesome.

Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 08:12 PM by TWriterD
if you haven't seen it already:

"Jon Stewart Gets It

Wow.

Everyone here in Burlington was watching Jon Stewart on CNN's Crossfire -- and then watched it a few more times on TiVo. Stewart took over the show -- called Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson partisan hacks, called the show and others like it theatre, said they are hurting America.

He begged for a true debate show, not a joust of disingenuous talking points. He made the distinction that while the hosts and guests on either side probably genuinely believe that Bush or Kerry would make the better president, the arguments they offer are frequently dishonest.

Asked which candidate would provide "better material" for him as a comedian, he said it didn't matter -- that the absurdity of the system drives the humor (before thanking the hosts for adding what they can to that absurdity).

This was one of those rare moments when someone talked through the filter."

I'm with ya. Watching Jon Stewart so genuinely take on those two numbnuts and the media in general brought back that feeling I had when I first watched Dean on "Meet the Press" way back when.

Too bad Robert Nofacts ("Douchebag of Liberty" in Daily Show jargon?) wasn't sitting at that table, but I guess I shouldn't get greedy!

60. His Whole Show Mocks Media Coverage
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 02:47 PM by CreekDog
Case in point: On the Daily Show, Samantha Bee interviewed a very serious, sober-looking scientist at the NY Zoo who said that there was homosexual activity among zoo animals, specifically penguins. In the name of balance, she interviewed a guy from the Family Research Council (a right wing group apparently) who denied that it was possible. They even took the guy to the zoo, ran some clips of the activity and he still said it was not possible.

This is how ridiculous our media is --it's the Swift Boat Veterans, but with different players and facts to make it more obvious.

Jon Stewart deserves his award --he does this every night. Thanks to his interview on Crossfire, I now understand this.

--And Jon Stewart is too popular for them not to have on again. They just want him on, they just want ratings, they want to bask in the glow of somebody of someone that people will turn the dial to watch.

67. Jon Stewart Bitchslaps CNN's 'Crossfire' Show
Jon Stewart Bitchslaps CNN's 'Crossfire' Show
10.15.2004 6:43 PM EDT
http://www.mtv.com/chooseorlose/headlines/news.jhtml?id=1492305
In what could well be the strangest and most refreshing media moment of the election season, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart turned up on a live broadcast of CNN's "Crossfire" Friday and accused the mainstream media - and his hosts in particular - of being soft and failing to do their duty as journalists to keep politicians and the political process honest.

Reaching well outside his usual youthful "Daily Show" demo, Stewart took to "Crossfire" to promote his new book, "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction" (see "Jon Stewart Writes A History Textbook That - At Last! - Features Nudity"), but instead of pushing the tome, Stewart used his time to verbally slap the network and the media for being "dishonest" and "doing a disservice" to the American public. After co-host Tucker Carlson suggested that Stewart went easy on Senator John Kerry when the candidate was a guest on "The Daily Show," Stewart unloaded on "Crossfire," calling hosts Carlson and Paul Begala "partisan hacks" and chiding them for not raising the level of discourse on their show beyond sloganeering.

"What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery," Stewart said. "You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

While the audience seemed to be behind Stewart, Begala and Carlson were both taken aback. The hosts tried to feed Stewart set-up lines hoping to draw him into a more light-hearted shtick, but Stewart stayed on point and hammered away at the show, the hosts, and the state of political journalism. Carlson grew increasingly frustrated, at first noting that the segment wasn't "funny," and later verbally sparring with the comedian.

76. Best line from the article, imo....

It seems fitting that the tirade came on a day when much of the media attention focused on the presidential race was directed at the mention of Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter during the last presidential debate, as opposed to the issues addressed at that debate.

This writer, at least, recognized the "Mary" issue as diversionary -- and that the media had gone running after it.

68. Jon Stewart = Joseph Welch
Stewart's takedown of the crap news establishment reminded me of Joseph Welch's shaming of Joe McCarthy.

Brilliant, heroic, and -- I hope -- historic.

69. Why doesn't someone Bittorrent this stuff?
Instead of relying on a server which can crash, you can load it to a bittorrent site. There, you download the file...but you keep your computer connected and "seeding" the file to other people. It's a cooperative way to share this video (a Democratic way) rather than putting the drain on a single system provider for personal gain (the Republican way).

I'm sure that someone on a Bittorrent site like www.phoenix-torrents.com or www.suprnova.com would be happy to create a torrent for the video and audio files. Then all you have to do is download it and "seed" what you download with a bittorrent client program.

70. wow.. what balls. Thank you Jon Stewart,
for preserving the quickly disappearing concept of responsible journalism, if only for a few minutes. I must say I do like "Crossfire" and the hosts. Even Tucker and Bob Novak I find likable, perhaps for being entertaining. The sad thing about all this is they're pundits, doing their job, which is entertainment more than informing the public. The fact that I find that appealing when I'm deeply concerned for the future of the country is unnerving.

I have enormous respect for both Paul Begala and James Carville. I think they're decent people and journalists, and they take conservatives to task. That's not my issue with them. There is a BIG problem with the media in general. And as good they are, they're part of the machine that is killing responsible journalism. Stewart is holding Crossfire to a higher standard than the rest of the media. And he's right to do so, as he said they're in a unique position, given a unique opportunity to challenge high ranking politicians' motives. This should not be entertainment for the sake of entertainment where everything is looked at as a joke. Those are very serious issues being discussed. I enjoy a good laugh just as much as the next guy but when politician do not look at this as serious discourse, they will not take this rare opportunity to publically interact with the audience seriously.

To be fair, I don't know what they could be doing differently, and I'd very much like to hear others' thoughts on it.

71. huzzah
That was outstanding what he said, really I adore Stewart's show, and America the book is the funniest thing I've ever read, but even when he's not cracking jokes Jon Stewart is the man. Huzzah for Jon Stewart.

A good old fashioned (verbal) a$$ whupping. Stewart was brilliant against those two shills. I had to wipe my eyes a few times.
