2001 - non-event. Hillary Clinton not in office when Gold Star Mothers decide to drop in without checking. Just passing by. Guess what? Turns into yet another Right-Wing smear campaign. "See how disgusting Hillary Clinton is? She hid from the Gold Star Mothers and refused to meet with them!" Unfortunately for the RWers, the Gold Star Mothers debunked that myth. Fortunately for the RWers, though, the truth is not widespread.

2005 - event. Cindy Sheehan is a Gold Star Mother. While the war spin is still "plausible" (the hunt for WMDs, crushing the threat Iraq poses), a grieving mother "meets with the President". Gets a generic "Who are we honoring today?" (in bored, annoyed voice) and "Thank you for your son's sacrifice, Mrs., um, uh, Mom." A year later, as the truth of the war is being revealed every day, the Gold Star Mother is demanding answers of this President. Enter the Right-Wing Smear Machine. This person has made the nearest thing to the greatest sacrifice . . . her own child went to war based on Bush's lies . . . and suddenly, for asking a question, she is to be treated as a terrorist. Possibly to be arrested for being "a security threat" - miles away from the pResident.

any alternative to NPR on my drive into work, I'd stop listening to their "Limbaugh-lite" crap altogether. Maybe I'll get some tapes and brush up on my French while driving in the morning...yeah, that's what I'll do...
