Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation has allegedly made demands for payments for editorial coverage in its Australian newspapers.
The allegation spilled over in a major legal case underway in Australia involving the country's principal media players.
Sale of editorial coverage is a major no-no and has rarely arisen as an issue, although some suburban weekly newspapers and magazines regularly sell features which include what is commonly known is the business as 'advertorials.'
The allegation aired last week involved some of Australia's major daily newspapers and concerned their mainstream editorial coverage.
The legal case launched in Australia's Federal Court in Sydney on September 11 by Australia's Seven Network is pitched against Murdoch's News, Kerry Packer's Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd., which operates Australia's Nine Network, Foxtel, a joint venture between News, Publishing & Broadcasting, the Australian telecommunications giant, Telstra, and a number of other parties including the country's major sporting bodies, a total of 22 defendants.
