Democrats Must "Restore Their Souls" to Reclaim Power
by Ken Bode
Eugene S. Pulliam Distinguished Visiting Professor of Journalism
at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana

On Thursday, Star readers found in the A-section a startling two-page spread that momentarily diverted attention from relief for Hurricane Katrina and evacuation for the oncoming Rita.

It was a political advertisement sponsored by a group called Win Without War. One page showed photos and quotes from four of the leading administration mouthpieces who sold America on the phony rationale for invading Iraq: Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice and President Bush.

Their quotes are labeled in a huge black headline: "They lied." On the facing page is a list of American military personnel killed in Iraq as of Sept. 12, a number that now approaches 2,000. The names are in very small print, but the headline is large and bold: They died."

I know nothing about this organization except that it is miles ahead of the leadership of the Democratic Party, a crowd cowed into silence by its own complicity in authorizing George W. Bush to implement his lies and invade Iraq in the first place. <snip>

1. Without moral clarity and unambiguous positions
the Democratic Party is lost.

2. Exactly. Its all about integrity
Standing by what they say, saying what they mean. This will win more red state country hearts than being duplicitous and backing repubs on things we don't believe in to "gain popularity".

their own, but they will not accept wishy-washy slippery empty words. The polls bear this out. Though most people disagree with most of Bush's positions, at least they know what they are, so his overall approval always seems to exceed the approval of anything he says or does. Even when it's all in the toilet.
